Important Tips For Black Mold Removal

What is Black Mold

In case you do not know what black mold is and why people are fussing about it, the term refers to a kind of fungus which can pollute the air in the surrounding environment with substances which are considered health risks and which can result in a number of debilitating physical ailments or even death. Like all other fungi, the black mold or the toxic mold, as it is sometimes called, thrives best in moist conditions. It attaches itself to objects that have cellulose. Cellulose is the fibrous structure that supports plant cells. Since it is found in all plants, it is abundant everywhere. It is present in the wood of houses, in paper and in some types of fabrics. Today, even concrete is impregnated with cellulose fibers in order to enhance its integrity. It should be expected that houses made of this type of concrete are potential nesting grounds for black mold.

How to go about removing it

Stress should be laid on the fact that once black molds have established colonies in any portion of the house, they usually remain there for so long as the structure that they have attached to is not replaced. That is because the pollutants, previously mentioned, are themselves the reproductive cells of the black mold. They are what we refer to as spores. Being microscopic, these spores can be buried in the surface of wood and escape whatever cleaning methods are used to remove the black mold. Additionally, they can hibernate and acquire tough covers which make them resistant to the action of heat, cold and chemicals. Even if the wood seems to have been washed clean, after a period of time, the spores will germinate again. To remove the molds forever, it will be necessary to destroy the spores in the wood as well.

The use of mold killers

There are some chemical products that are capable of killing the mold and its spores. However, after deactivating the organism, it will have to be cleaned carefully, following certain recommended steps that ensure the safety of the people cleaning. Apply the chemical spray to the portion of the structure affected. Follow the instructions on the package regarding the correct manner of application. There should be some information available as to how long it will take the chemical to destroy the mold and with how many repeat applications, if any.

Once dead, the mold will dry up. That situation is even more dangerous than when the mold was alive. Although the spores in the mold are dead, they still retain their poisonous substance, this time compounded by the chemical that was used to kill them. The dry and dead spores can be much easier caught up by the air and breathed by people and animals. For that reason, immediately after having killed the mold it should be washed clean. Soak the area well in cleaning solution first. If the structure is a wall, you will need to apply the cleansing solution with a rag to the area affected. Do not use a brush for this purpose as it may cause the dead spores to be flung out into the air. Repeatedly rub the area with a rag immersed in the cleaning solution until it is visibly free of the mold. After that, you may douse clean water carefully on the area to remove the cleaning solution and any remaining dead spores.

Throughout the entire operation the use of a filtered mask, protective goggles and long-sleeved clothing is recommended.
