Installing a solar water heater in your home or vacation home can be a real energy saver and it’s kind of fun creating your own hot water without relying on electricity. Building a solar water heater is not that difficult and will cut back on your electric bill enough to make it worth it. If you shop and hunt around you can get the parts at reasonable costs and it will pay for itself pretty quick.
Depending on where you live geographically, there would be a specific style of water heater you would build. There are currently over 300,000 water heater installed around the United States and thousands more installed every year. You can buy systems already built and ready to go into the home or if you feel up to it you could build your own. With a set of plans and instructions a solar water heater can be built by someone with basic do-it-yourself skills.
There are two common types of water heaters, the passive water heater and the active solar water heater. The active solar heater uses a circulator pump and a temperature control. The passive solar water systems do not have any moving parts but rely on the principle that heat rises and cold falls. In the passive system the hot water will rise up through the system and the cooler water will stay lower down. The passive system also comes in two styles called the batch & thermosyphon and the active systems all operate pretty much the same.
