Portable air conditioners are self-contained cooling systems that are all about chilling areas where installing traditional units would be too impractical or costly. They are often used as substitute air conditioners or even accompanying ones for rooms that already have an AC unit. A great advantage to using them is that they can easily be transferred from one room to another, because they require no permanent installation. This makes them a popular device for those who want something that is easy to use, and can be substituted instead of putting traditional air conditioners in every room, which will rarely even be used simultaneously. Portable air conditioners, however, must be vented through a window every time a unit is moved to a certain area. All units come with an exhaust hose that should be positioned properly before cooling. Like any electronic device, portable AC units must be maintained, but they are well known for the fact that upkeep is quick and easy. Many units have the same requirements and guidelines.
Installation of a portable air conditioner is very easy, because it only involves planting the exhaust hose near a window, wherein it will lead outside the room. A venting kit is usually included with the unit, and the hose is placed in the appropriate space of the kit. After that, cooling may begin. The hose is used to filter warm air out of the unit, and sometimes also releases water condensate to prevent dripping inside the room.
By cooling ambient air, the portable AC unit also removes water. Water is the resource used in order to keep the actual unit from overheating; having a cool unit means it will be more efficient in cooling the room. During especially warm days, more water is collected. However, after certain periods of time, the condensate water must be removed to prevent overflowing. Portable air conditioners manage this in a number of ways. Sometimes, the water is collected in bowls or buckets that must be manually and regularly emptied. Doing so once a day is recommended for a unit that is used frequently, but if the climate conditions are warmer, then emptying will have to be done more often. Some advanced models are able to evaporate the moisture in the air discharge, enabling it to pass through the exhaust pipe. This minimizes the need to empty the water. Also, almost all portable air conditioners can be attached to a drain hose, which will routinely drain the water. Condensate pumps can also be used to expel the water more easily, and will not require much human interference.
It is always good to keep the portable air conditioner clean, by washing the air filter, which removes particulates from the air. Sometimes, built-in air purifiers will come with the unit, but regularly changing or cleaning the air filter will result in a much cleaner environment and a well-functioning AC unit. By constantly following these guidelines, a portable air conditioner will be able to operate properly and to the fullest capacity, for a good long time.
