Solar Cell In A Nutshell

Posted: Feb 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

There are high-efficiency solar cells that can be bought from local electrical stores, while the parts and accessories can be found in local hardware stores.

To start with your home made solar cell, you have to begin with getting a sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store with a measurement of half a square foot. You must manage your expectation as this measurement works only for a number of kitchen equipment. Two alligator clip leads are needed to be attached to a copper plate and to the cuprous oxide-coated plate. These will play as the positive and negative terminals of the meter. An electric stove or burner is needed to burn the copper sheet. As the copper gets hotter, the colors are replaced with a black coating of cupric oxide. As the copper is further burned, it will flake off showing hues of red and purple.

You will also need a plastic bottle (which should be cut open on top) or a jar. The copper sheets will be placed inside the jar. A mixture of salt and water shall later on be added inside the jar together with the copper sheets. The energy that shall be produced by the reaction of salt water with the copper sheets can be detected with the use of a sensitive micro-ammeter. The micro-ammeter should be able to read currents between 10 and 50 microamperes.

Further details regarding the step by step process of creating solar cells are available in various sites in the Internet and will help you customize the device according to your expanding needs. Size is no limit to building a home made solar cell because of the ability of this device to empower any electric or mechanical equipment.

Uses

You actually have the liberty to cover an entire surface with solar cells to generate so much power. The amount of solar cells you need will actually depend on your consumption. You can collect free energy from the sun and run your appliances and equipment free of charge. You can incorporate these solar cells to all appliances or only on select appliances at your home. Options to customize your own solar cells are actually up to you.

So first, you have to audit and assess your average electricity consumption so that you will know how much solar cells you will need to power a specific area, a room, or even the entire house. Of course, larger power supply capacity would need higher number of solar cells.

The step by step guide provided in the previous section, the amount of materials are only enough to supply electricity to an entire kitchen. This is of course a subjective fact since different rooms in the house have varied numbers of electricity-powered equipment from other houses.

Advantages

You can save so much monthly because of your independence from electricity supply provided only by power plants. Since solar cells get direct energy from the Sun, it leaves you worry-free of having to pay for per kilowatt consumption of electricity in your home. Using solar cells is greener for long-term in a sense that you will help lessen consumption of renewable energy produced by power plants, thus, lessening emissions of toxic materials into the atmosphere.

The Downside

The process of building home made solar cells will not always guarantee a fool-proof setup. This is because, as far as construction is concerned, not all builders actually possess the skill to engineer devices like home made solar cells.

Creating home made solar cells may actually take longer than expected and might also be prone to minor accidents if you are not careful. If you opt to use the easy method of burning copper sheets, you have to understand that the process has an attached toxicity in itself. Burning will emit fumes that could also be harmful to the atmosphere. Although, you would have to consider that this is just a short-term effect on the environment as compared to the long term benefits that the product would contribute to the environment.
