Solar Energy Disadvantages

Posted: Sep 01, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Solar energy does have disadvantages that might make it unsuitable for some uses. Due to the nature of solar energy, it is only possible to generate a limited amount of power. The only way to increase the amount of power produced is to build more solar cells and panels, which would take up a lot of land.

Possibly the biggest disadvantage of solar energy is how inconsistently it can be drawn. This makes solar energy impractical as a primary source in areas where there is little sunlight or several days of rainfall per year. Installing and maintaining a solar energy system is expensive. Solar panels are not cheap and will require replacing every decade. Solar energy heating, requires detailed designs that must be perfect. Using the wrong type of glass, or being a couple of degrees off with measurements can mean that the building will be too hot or too cold. While solar energy produces no water or air pollutant, the plants that create that energy may cause environmental damage. Technology is continually improving (third-generation cells already are being devised and tested), thus the cost of solar energy equipment probably will go down over time, but the current standard is still lacking in terms of cost effectiveness.

While the initial cost of installing solar energy systems is often low relative to the savings the user will experience in the long run, that doesn't always mean that the average person has the money to spend up front. This is a major disadvantage for solar energy, and is likely a top reason more people do not have it. Installing solar equipment can reach into the thousands of dollars just to power a hot water heater or dryer. Those living paycheck to paycheck aren't likely to be able to afford the upfront expense. Solar energy is very clean and a great alternative to conventional heating and electrical systems. It is also good to recognize solar energy disadvantages. If you are thinking about employing solar energy you must read this first to make a informed decision.
