The price of electricity is going up every year. Some people are getting fed up with fuel surcharges, and rate hikes, and are starting to produce their own power. Windmills have been extremely popular lawn decorations for many years, but few people know that if you live in an area where the wind blows, they can me made to produce electricity.
You can build a windmill that produces electricity for less than two hundred dollars, with items that are easily available from your local home improvement or hardware store. In some cases these parts can be salvaged from junk, broken items, or unfinished projects for free. This would leave you with a windmill for the cost of the plans. One windmill connected to your homes electrical system will produce some power, and reduce the amount of electricity you must purchase every month. But there is no rule that says you can only build one. If you have the space and wind, you can build as many as you want to. If enough windmills are connected to your home, you can exclusively use wind power, and not have to purchase any electricity at all. Some people are setting up combination of wind and solar power systems, with banks of batteries to store the extra power for later use. This allows them to completely disconnect their home from the power grid, without walking around in the dark.
Another plus is that the solar and wind power systems produce absolutely no smoke, smog, or greenhouse gasses while they operate, and are completely green. If you are an environmentally conscious person, someone who likes do it yourself projects, or just fed up with high power bills, building your own windmills may be just the thing for you.
