Wood Burning Fireplace Insert-Don't Waste Your Money

Posted: Nov 18, 2009 |Comments: 0 | Views: 749 |

When trying to cut utility bills the question may arise about whether or not to invest in a wood burning fireplace insert. The cost of an insert versus the extra cost of utilities has to be carefully weighed. As utilities continue to rise, it is necessary to do your homework to decide if a fireplace insert is right for you and your family.

If you are considering getting an insert for your fireplace, think about the following:

1. Is the fireplace itself sound or is it in need of repair?

If there is a crack is there proper ventilation?

If there are structural problems with the fireplace, get them fixed before installing an insert. Many times if a fireplace is showing structural wear or cracks, there are structural problems with the house itself in that particular area.

2. How much are you really going to use an insert?

If you don't already use the room that the fireplace is located or the areas around it, don't bother with an insert. Just close off the area if it gets too cold-which is what is happening already. However, if you really think you will utilized the area if it is warmer, consider usage against the price of installation.

3. Don't do the installation yourself unless you really know what you are doing. Clearance is important.

Ventilation is critical. Every fireplace is different and so every installation of an insert has its own unique quirks. You will save money in the long run if you go ahead and hire the installation done by professionals.

Although it may be tempting to want to try and save money and try to do the installation yourself, it is best to not have to wonder whether or not proper clearances were allowed or whether the vent is the proper kind and height for the type of fuel you plan on using such as corn, wood or wood pellets.

Get it done right the first time.
