Wooden Garden Shed – What you need to know before you begin

Posted: Feb 19, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

By building a wooden garden shed, you will be able to save yourself a whole load of cash by doing it yourself, as long as you spend some time with the initial planning stages. Firstly, make your mind up exactly what type of shed you want and how big you want it. This will depend on how much space you have available.

You must decide where you want to site your shed. If you are going to require electricity and running water in it, you need to ensure that these utilities are close at hand and that you will not be spending extra cash by building your wooden shed too far away from the source of these.

Depending on the overall size that you have decided you will need your wooden shed to be, you may need some form of building permit from the local authorities. It is best to check with your local planning officer before you commence building, just to check if any permissions are needed.

Another matter that often gets overlooked at this stage is the size of doorway you will require. This very much depends on what use you are going to put your wooden garden shed to. If you think that you are going to be storing large garden machinery in it, you will need a fairly large opening. It is best to ensure that you get the size of the doorway right, as it will be difficult to make it larger at a later date.

Also, take time to consider if you need to put windows in your shed. If you are going to be using it as a workshop, obviously the more light you have coming in the better. Alternatively, if your shed will only be used for storage it will be more secure without windows, if people can't see what you have in there they are less likely to want it for themselves.

Above all else make sure that you get yourself a decent set of shed plans to work to. These will not only guide you through the whole project step, by step but will also allow you to calculate the exact quantity of timber that you will require, thus avoiding you over buying, and will reduce costly waste.

There is a lot of help and advice available on the internet on the subject of how to make sheds, from free shed plans through to tips on woodworking skills. For a relatively small cost you can save yourself a whole lot of time and trouble, not to mention cash.
