How To Adapt Your Skills To A Changing Work Environment

It seems that no matter where you are on this wonderful earth, you or someone you know has been in some way affected by the current global financial crisis.

Employers are looking at ways to handle the lack of cash flow and ways of keeping staff employed; reducing the amount of hours, job sharing, and as the last resort, redundancy.

When faced with redundancy, the change can be a shock to say the least. If you’ve been with a company or organisation for any length of time, it will generally mean a change in career, either with a new organisation in your current field, or a complete career change altogether.

If you’ve spent quite a number of years on your present field, a complete change to something new might be a step too bold at the moment. And, given the emotions associated with a career change, your frame of mind may not be best to contemplate and embark on such a life changing decision.

Going straight back into a new job within your field may also not be possible, if your skills were made redundant and the available jobs within that sector have shrunk. There would simply be too many applicants applying for the same jobs.

If a career change is not a good option at the moment, maybe you can look at making good use of your skills and acquired knowledge in a different way.

Why not put your years of expertise in writing and market that knowledge within your career community.

All that knowledge that you are trying to market by selling your services to an employer for a job can be just as easily put into a report, book or newsletter and marketed instead of a CV or Resume.

If you don’t see yourself as a writer or have trouble putting your words on paper, there is information available to guide you through the process.

Electronic books or ‘ebooks’ as they are most commonly referred to are a popular way to translate all those years of experience into a useful body of information, specific to the people or organisations who can benefit.

And believe it or not, there is free information available on how to write and sell your ebook. So, even if you don’t see yourself as a writer, there is help on hand to guide you through the process.

You can also create an audio book, whereby, instead of putting your information down on paper, you can as an alternative create a recording of your information so that people can listen to the information.

Audio books are very popular and an easy way to get your ideas out, if the thought of writing brings back visions of your high school English teacher.

Thinking of new and imaginative ways to manage your future career direction is necessary given the current global financial crisis. Jobs will not be available by the same means in the future, as they have been in the past. You will need to adapt and change your approach to making the most of your skills if you are to survive financially.

Your skills will still be in demand, but the conventional way of selling these skills perhaps through your CV or resume is being challenged.
