No Kidding, here’s the continuation from part I…

The next step in the process is to consider exactly why you are about to write this e-book. Again, what we are trying to do is make the actual writing part as easy as possible. Of course, as all good writers know, rewrites are always inevitable. The point, however, is to realize that the more that is determined before the writing is started, the less rework that will be required later.

So, why are you writing and going to publish this e-book?
 
• I want to build on my credibility as an authority in this field

• I want to use it as a means of directing targeted traffic to my website and the products I am selling.

• I will use it to promote my business

• I will use it to promote relevant affiliate programs

• I will sell it as a product on my website

• I will use it as a giveaway to attract subscriptions to my newsletter

• I want to attract affiliates to promote and sell the e-book

• I want to be able to use sections of the e-book as an recourse to mail to my list and attract new sub scrimptions

You get the idea and I am sure you can add other reasons.

I hope this will also help you to decide on the structure of your e-book. Following your introduction, will you use specific chapters or will those chapters have to be grouped into sections. With promotion in mind, whether selling or giveaway, the section or chapter titles are as important as your e-book title. They are in essence the “benefits” that your e-book delivers to the reader.

Making your e-Book Reader Friendly

In part I, we looked at researching and understanding who the target audience is going to be. This should help in guiding you as to how your writing will not only attract readers but also how to keep them engaged throughout the e-book. Based on your research, you may have identified that the use of some of the following “techniques” works with that audience; others are just good writing practice…

• Writing in a personal and conversational tone

• Keeping paragraphs and sentences short, but vary the length

• Using an active rather than passive style

• Using anecdotes or short stories within your chapters

• Including photos and images

• Including quick tips and hints throughout

• Varying the density of the pages

• Making use of numbered or bulleted lists

• Chances are the e-book will be read on the screen so maximize the use of “white” space making it easier on the eyes of your readers, otherwise they will just stop reading after a while

• Ensuring your e-book has an easy to read design. Avoid using all kinds of different fonts, lots of different colors and different font sizes otherwise your reader will be tuning out before the end of the first chapter

• Using spell-check and grammar check. Still very important to a lot of readers.

Who knows, your favorite niche may be insomnia but the last thing we want to do is put our readers to sleep or lose the opportunity to encourage your reader to take your suggested course of action because they didn’t get that far! Good writing, however, takes practice and lots of it. If you find yourself rewriting chapters or parts of chapters, be glad. This is all part of honing your writing skills.
