Ian McEwan also popularly known as "Ian Macabre" is a novelist, screenplay writer as well as a short-story writer-- all- in-one. He was felicitated with numerous other glorious awards and recognition in literature, including the Booker Prize in 1998 for his famous novel “Amsterdam”, and Somerset Maugham Award in 1976 for his collection of short stories “First Love, Last Rites”.

As a novel writer also he won wide recognition among the readers. Especially his two earliest novels “The Cement Garden (1978) and “The Comfort of Strangers (1981) has revealed his uncomparable talent as an excellent novel writer. Another masterpiece of this brilliant writer is “Enduring Love” which is published in 1997 won the hearts of many a bibliophiles just because of its superb way of writing. So was his novel, “Atonement” which was termed as the best novelof 2002 by Time Magazine.

Ian McEwan is a writer of great talent and repute which can be sensed from his works. One can not only find variety but also superb narrative ability and life like presentation of every character in his novel. He is just perfect in making his work more realistic and readable. We can find almost all characteristics of a modern novel in “Saturday”, which surrounds eventful day in the life of highly successful neurosurgeon. People also find some biographical linkage in this novel. The main character of Saturday, Henry Perowne, lives in a very popular square in central London where Ian McEwan lives now after being relocated from Oxford. This novel also brought him tremendous success and popularity as a writer and made him the proud owner of another award the “ James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 2005. Not only that his most recent novel “On Chesil Beach” was also shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize (2007).

Not only as a novelist Ian McEwan is also a successful composer of screenplays, stageplay and children's fiction. He also have written an oratorio. As a writer he can be called an all-rounder with hands on so many genres of literature. In most of his writings we would find influences of great scholars and philosophers like Saul Bellow, Philip Roth, John Updike, Franz Kafk and Virginia Woolf. We can even expect much more form this England born writer in the near future who is presently concentrating on writing the libretto to an opera called "For You”, which depicts the story of a composer that have crossed the peak of his sexual and professional prowess.
