Becoming a Merchant and What You Can Expect

Throughout the centuries, the idea that an exchange of goods for services has been a prevalent part of the structure for our economic growth. Becoming a merchant account provider entails a certain risk you take with each transaction. To put simply, you do not know who you are selling to or if they will pay you for the services you provide. Millennia, the methods for collection our earned money has become increasingly more lax than previous forms of persuasion. You want to avoid a high risk merchant account for this very reason.

In the Merchant of Venice, a play written by William Shakespeare, a merchant known as Shylock loans a bit of money to Antoine, who needed it to pay off some his debt. A deal was made between them that said that if Antoine didn’t pay back Shylock the money within a certain period of time, he could take a pound of Antoine’s flesh from any part of his body. While seemingly cruel, what reasonable method of getting someone to pay you back existed?

While the collection of money is something you’ll have to worry about, becoming a merchant is quite easy. All it takes is a couple of forms filled out so the merchant account provider can make sure that you’re a legit person that really wants to help the economy. This process usually takes one to two weeks because of the multiple steps one must take to check your background. Once your application has been accepted, it’s time to get the merchant account integrated with your website.

What this means is that in order for you to take orders from the website and get them processed in your gateway, you need to have a way for the information to get sent to the gateway from your website. The gateway is what tells the money that’s being exchanged where to go. If you don’t have a gateway setup, there is no way that you would be able process the transaction unless you have a computer in your store that did it for you.

Once you have this setup you are ready to start building your online store. An online store is exactly what you would see going to any of the major retail store websites and ordering a product there. There is an image the customer can view, a quantity, a price, and a description. If you want to buy the item there’s a Checkout button and you will be walked through the process of filling out your billing information for the product.

Then all you need to worry about is your shipping methods. Shipping is always a touchy subject for customer, so when you can you’ll want to offer discounts on shipping or relieve it all together. Becoming a merchant is simple in these times. Considering the former, I’m glad you don’t need to put up a pound of flesh to borrow some money from the bank.
