Building a Successful Business Online

The basics of setting up a simple, informative and user-friendly business website can be learned in a relatively short period of time. Some people may be naturals, whilst others may need to outsource certain elements of the setting-up, especially if there’s a significant amount of coding involved.

Whatever route a website takes towards its final state though, it’s important to remember that the website design element is only a small part of the process of turning a business into a success.

The management, maintenance and updating of the site is crucial, whilst the choice of domain name should also accurately reflect what exactly the company offers.

Furthermore, the marketing of the website is also a crucial element of its long-term success; there’s little point in setting up the world’s best website if nobody knows it’s there. Knowing how to maximise its visibility on a very crowded World Wide Web should be a key consideration.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) has emerged as one of the most powerful online marketing tools and, many would argue, is an art form that’s worth mastering. This may be true, but there are some very simple steps businesses can take to ensure their website features prominently on Google, Yahoo and any other search engine they wish.

Firstly, there is no substitute for fresh content. Many business websites have a dedicated industry or company blog which are updated daily with articles, advice and general musings relating to the sector they are in. By using carefully selected key search terms within the text – on the website in general and on the blog – this is a good starting point in building searching engine rankings.

Similarly, if the blog offers genuinely good content and is marketed well, the online community could potentially follow it on a regular basis and link to it from their own site – something else that search engines love.

Link-building can happen organically and it can grow exponentially if the content is of good enough quality. Sometimes a little more effort will be needed though and offering guest blog posts to relevant industry partners in exchange for a link-back can also work wonders from an SEO perspective.

Web hosting, too, shouldn’t be ignored. Besides the need to have a reliable web hosting company, it’s important to look beyond the mere services and guarantees that they offer. From an SEO point of view, the location of a web hosting company is crucial as search engines use this data along with other factors such as domain extensions when determining overall search engine ranking, particularly when deciding which pages should appear in local search engines.

Businesses looking to reach customers in the UK for example, should consider having both a domain name ending in .co.uk and - if possible - hosting the website with a UK company whose servers are located within the UK. Combining these two factors as well as building links from other .co.uk websites hosted in the UK will greatly help a business in reaching UK searchers.

So there’s a lot to consider when setting up business online. Building a quality website is one thing; but managing, maintaining and marketing it is another thing altogether and should be factored into any enterprise’s online strategy.
