Growth and Recent Trends in Ecommerce

The change that the Internet has brought to the world today has been incredible. Communication is not the only aspect that has transformed tremendously because of the inclusion of the Internet. One field that has seen a lot of change is that of commerce. Electronic commerce or, E-commerce as it is more commonly known, can include any transaction or business communication that take place on the Net.

One very obvious reason for consumers using the Internet to shop is because of the convenience factor. E-commerce means that you can be sitting in front of a computer screen, anywhere in the world and choose what you want to buy from around the globe. The amount of time and money saved by being able to shop online is the top reason that e-commerce has become so popular amongst contemporary shoppers.

Research shows that shopping online is actually the most preferred way of shopping for online consumers. Going to individual shops, malls or referring to catalogs all fall behind in preference when compared to shopping on the Internet. This goes to show that as consumers become more familiar and comfortable with shopping online, they start preferring that to other forms of shopping. However, when compared to traditional shopping, online shopping is just a drop in the ocean of business transactions.

Online search engines is another reason why shopping online has become so popular. The accessibility that the Internet offers means that a large number of people are going online just to research about retail stores and brands. The fact is that even though so many millions of dollars are being spent on advertising each year, consumers don’t often mention that as a major influencing factor for when they find new retailers and brands.

Word of mouth has always taken front seat when it comes to new information about retailers. The credibility that word of mouth offers, in comparison to paid advertising, is one of the reasons that word of mouth is so effective. The presence of the Internet has, however, changed the status of word of mouth too. In recent times, online search has taken over the place of even word of mouth. Online search is thrice more popular than any other kind of influence when it comes to finding new retailers and brands.

There are, of course, a number of setbacks to ecommerce that stops consumers from shopping online. Especially those who are new to the Internet are skeptical about how safe shopping online is. Fraud is the main setback that ecommerce faces. Another problem is that of return policy. Many shoppers might be unsure of if it is a good choice to shop online if the return policy is not clear. Sometimes sites ask for too much information when consumers are trying to complete a transaction. This can be an extremely exasperating experience for shoppers and is often cited as a reason for abandonment of a transaction.

One thing that cannot be overlooked when it comes to online shopping is the issue of technology. The technology that is involved when a site is built and maintained is a key factor in e-commerce. Problems with navigation and shopping cart issues might all lead to consumers deciding against completing the transaction online. Having clear policy, user-friendly functionality and up-to-date technology can easily solve these problems.

One thing to take into consideration when an ecommerce site is being put up is the technology team and the marketing team. Earlier it was the technology team that used to completely take care of the building of the site, even if they were not taking any main decisions. However, site owners are now realizing that it is important that the marketing team has just as much input into the creation and running of the website. After all, it is marketing messages that are going to be communicated on the website thus it is only logical that the marketing team and the technology team work together on the site. On the other hand, the technology team might not actually be involved in decision-making steps in some firms. If the ecommerce part of the company is only a small side of the marketing then the technology team might not be involved in decisions. Taking into consideration the bigger picture, marketing and the technology team should maintain a good relationship within the firm.

There is another problem from the marketing perspective and that is the issue of actually convincing the company that ecommerce is important. Bigger companies might be more open to the idea of online business than smaller firms. Often the marketing team has to convince the decision makers that having an ecommerce site would be beneficial to the company. Since there are expenses that have to be incurred by the company for a site like this, without concrete and convincing reasoning, it would be difficult for the marketing team to push for an ecommerce site.

The growth and popularity of ecommerce is definitely something to look into. Since such a large number of people are spending so much time online these days, it seems to be the best point of contact within contemporary settings. Ecommerce takes the contact one step further and allows consumers to complete the shopping process. There is still a lot to be said and to be discovered about ecommerce since it is seeing exciting changes everyday as the Internet and its related entities develop.
