There’s no shortage of online “get rich quick” schemes. All you have to do is open up your email and you’re sure to have one or two emails telling you how they made $192,457.87 online their first week. Most of us glance at these emails, recognize them as spam, click the delete button, and go about our merry day. But the question remains. Is there a way to make decent money online?

Choose Your Product Wisely
It’s not enough to sell something you like. You need to sell something in high demand with low competition. Time spent researching the most profitable product is the best time you can possibly spend. Poor product choice is the number one killer of online stores. Find your niche and become an authority.
Provide Quality Content
If your online store has nothing but products, then people have no reason to come back. There are millions upon millions of online stores. You need to make sure people remember yours. the way to do that is to write quality articles that are relevant to your product so people have a reason to keep coming back. In addition, you’ll establish yourself as an authority in your field and people tend to make purchases from someone that they like and trust.
Watch Your Bottom Line
Keep in mind the costs of running a website, shipping, power, credit card processing fees, etc. when you’re pricing your products. It’s important to stay competitive, but you need to turn a profit. No one wants to pay $2000 to get $1500 in sales.
Get the Word Out
Sign up for directories, optimize your site, trade links, do what ever you have to do to get your site noticed. A site that has a great product in high demand and offers great content will still fail if it has no traffic. Once your site is up and running, 80% of your time should be spent marketing and 20% on updating your site.
This might look like a lot of work, and it is. At least, it is at first. I could take you a few days to get your site running, but after that it should only take you a few hours 2 or 3 times a week to keep your virtual cash register ringing.
Just remember: One online store netting $500 a month may not sound that exciting, but I bet 10 sites netting $500 a month sounds pretty sweet. Keep at it and you could be the next E-tail Tycoon.
