Layman Explains "more Money Makes Society Miserable, Warns Report"
Jamie Doward's "More Money Makes Society miserable, warns report " (The Observer, Mar. 14, 2010) is a very good article, which explains a new complicated study of economics, carried by two professors of Curtis Eaton and Mukesh Eswaran. The profound study came to a conclusion that the wealth of a country increases with the decreasing of happiness.
Let us explain this study with simple words by means of everyday common sense as follows:
Instincts
Obviously, our instincts run all our body's physiological functions, including psychological one. Instincts are our ancestors' successful experiences saved on our DNA 10,000 years ago.
Our body has to complement these old instincts with something new in order to cope with new things happen in new conditions of today. Thus, by means of our wisdom, we have been developing new unconsciousness (pre-instinct which is not inheritable). (1)
Happiness
Apparently, to be happy is one of our most important instincts. It is just like the green traffic light directing us where to go in order to survive or reach the human life goal of propagation of offspring. Otherwise, human beings can not survive today.(1)
10,000-Years-Ago Norm
However, all the instincts mentioned above have their valid scope. The scope must be the conditions, in which the instincts were formed in the evolutionary process.
Naturally, the scope must be the conditions where our ancestors lived. That is the 10,000-Years-Ago Norm.
Out of this scope, the happiness is invalid. (1-3)
Invalid Happiness
Invalid happiness can not lead to real happiness. And contrarily it hurts our happiness in most cases. Such as happiness from smoking, marijuana addiction, junk food, etc. (2,3)
Of course, it includes the "conspicuous consumption" and "Seek status" stated in the two professors' study. It destroys equality, one of our vital instincts, which is essential for our symbiosis. Being without equality is something like being without freedom. Both of them hinder our efficient propagation of offspring and thus make us unhappy. (1)
Conclusion
To be happy needs symbiosis, this in turn needs equality and freedom. Both of which are destroyed by competing for more money
