7 Habits of Highly Successful Students - Habit III

Posted: Nov 08, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Hello again.

Before I introduce Habit III of our series on the 7 Habits of Highly Successful Students, I want you to first ponder over the following research…

A study of Harvard graduates found that after twenty years, three percent of those who had written down goals achieved more financially compared to the other 97% combined! They concluded that an average person with average talent, ambition, and education can outstrip the most brilliant genius in our society, if that person has clear, focused goals.

Ask yourself: Do you already have a game plan for success? Or are you simply going with the flow?

Failing to plan is as good as planning to fail. Highly successful students always have multiple plans in mind. They have one for each examination, test and project in their schedule, one for each challenge (academic or non-academic) they have encountered and one for each goal they have in mind. These plans are all part of other broader plans they have in their lives. By dividing and executing these plans, these students are constantly advancing towards what they seek in life. This is why the top students always seem to be confident in whatever they attempt; and is why they always perform well in school and beyond. It all boils down to having concrete and effective plans for success!

The mother of all plans is your Master Plan in life. Having a Master Plan is essential to becoming a top academic performer. This plan acts as a guide to all the other plans and goals you have in life. It gives you purpose and fuels you to achieve what you desire. Unfortunately, the creation and implementation of a Master Plan can be quite a challenging affair.

There are three stages that you will need to overcome so as to achieve success. First, you will need to possess acute self-awareness. You must understand your preferences in life, what you wish to achieve, and both your capabilities and weaknesses. Next, you must establish a vision, or an end-point in your Master Plan. This end-point will determine the planning horizon you are looking at. With your vision established, you can then proceed to set and achieve the main and intermediary goals that will ultimately lead you to attain your vision.

With your goals and plans in place, you must work on them diligently and strive to achieve them. If you fail, learn from your mistakes and revise your future plans accordingly. If you succeed, reflect on your experience and see if you can execute similar plans more effectively in future. This is the essence of Habit IIITo plan for success and progressively get better at doing so. With this, academic success becomes a certainty.

Complacency is one the greatest enemies of students. Complacent students are more likely to take short-cuts in the subject, to take their lessons less seriously and to devote minimal effort in revising for the examinations. Such actions often create blind spots in the short term, hence resulting in inconsistencies in the student's grades. They too weaken the foundation of the student in the long term.

Most students do not possess conscious control over their power to believe. They go through their lives taking minimal notice of their thought processes, such as how the mind moves, what it fears, what it heeds, what it says to itself, and what it brushes aside. They do not question their beliefs, but instead treat them like gospel. These students will remain mediocre and achieve nothing more than average grades. Are you ready to challenge your beliefs?
