A Few 'Graceful' Thoughts For Teachers

The other day I attended an UGC sponsored State Level  Seminar at Titus II Teachers College, Tiruvalla. It  was one of those fruitful seminars that introduces one to novel thoughts and ideas. Given below are some thought provoking questions posed by  His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan who gave the Presidential address during the inaugural session on 9 July 2009:

  • In olden times one could make very accurate calculations using the brain … today we are dependent on  calculators for simple calculations. How can we improve this situation?
  • It is a pity that brilliant students never  join  traditional course such as BA/BSc… and without brilliant teachers  can we really  expect great things to happen  at the secondary level?
  • There are teachers in Kerala who take long leave to go to work in  Gulf countries  for highly paid jobs. But the obnoxious part is that they  return to rejoin duty a couple of months prior to their retirement  to ensure their pensioner benefits. Isn’t this unethical on the part of teachers?
  • President Obama, while addressing  children in the US asked them to emulate Indian children. He wished they gave up the habit of  playing video games continuously and hooking on the TV serials. Instead he wanted them to use the computer for doing homework and updating information as Indian children do. Well… are Indian children really using the computer for study??
  • The lotus symbolizes  the teacher … its roots run deep into  the muddy soil and draws energy. And when the sun  which symbolizes the children come before them, the buds blossom and excite the children. How many of us in the teaching profession are lotuses of this kind?
