ALL ABOUT CLEP

CLEP, which stands for College-Level Examination Program, is a program that is comprised of 34 different exams that students can take to earn college credits. By passing specific CLEP exams, students can obtain credit hours to replace class enrollment and attendance. Sometimes referred to as credit by examination, most of these CLEP tests give students the ability to earn three or six credits, while a few grant twelve credits. CLEP offers testing in subjects such as business, composition and literature, foreign language, history and social science, and science and mathematics. Each exam requires that students demonstrate competence of material typically taught within the first two years of college.

The Benefits of CLEP

CLEP tests give students the opportunity to receive college credits for the knowledge of specific material that they already know, saving them both time and money. CLEP exams enable students to skip introductory classes, quickly move on to upper-level classes, and advance in a degree program when time is of the essence. These exams give students the opportunity to earn college credits for knowledge they obtain throughout life so they can spend their time concentrating on the essentials they need from higher education. In addition, students can drastically cut high tuition costs with CLEP exams, which each cost only $72 to take. Students can also study on their own flexible schedule and then take CLEP exams year-round at local convenient testing centers throughout the United States and abroad.

Before Students Take a CLEP Exam

Even though over 2,900 colleges and universities accept CLEP, each learning institution has different requirements regarding how it will apply credits earned through CLEP exams to students’ specific degree requirements. Therefore, students should contact campuses directly and seek information from academic advisors to ensure the college they attend grants CLEP credits for the specific exams they plan to take. Before taking any test, students can read the descriptions of each exam and learn about the specific knowledge and skills required to obtain a satisfactory CLEP score. Students can find a CLEP testing center close to where they live by searching online or contacting local colleges. After registering for their CLEP, students can prepare with college textbooks, study guides, and specialized online programs with curriculums that supply sample questions and materials to enhance testing results.

Who Takes CLEP Exams?

Wide ranges of people across the world take CLEP exams to demonstrate their proficiencies and earn college credits. Current college students who want to save expensive tuition fees and advance quickly in their program as well as international students seeking to transfer their knowledge obtained overseas commonly use CLEP. Individuals who fluently speak and write a foreign language can earn college credits with their valuable skills by passing CLEP tests. Parents and other working adult students with busy schedules, jobs, families, and other commitments who seek to advance or change their careers can benefit from the flexibility of CLEP. Military personnel use CLEP tests to earn credits while enlisted and unable to attend traditional college classes, thus allowing them a way to enhance their education and work towards a degree.
