Can You Trust Internet Tutoring Services?

One aspect of the Internet that many people are still unsure about is it's trustworthiness, which is why many people are unsure about Internet tutoring services. Because we don't know who is behind the computer screen when we disclose personal information, we very often would rather not disclose it at all.

Of course, it's not a bad idea to be skeptical of most sites you run across initially. However, there are some out there that are extremely reliable. To help you determine which sites are likely to be more reliable than others, let's take a look at some questions you might ask as you're conducting your screening process.

How Do They Screen Their Tutors?

One way to see if the Internet tutoring service your thinking of utilizing is reliable is by checking to see what types of tutors they say they provide to students and how they screen them. What you want to look for is how it screens its tutors (Are they selected based on academic preferences? Teaching experience?).

If they note that their tutors are current or former teachers, university and college professors, and even graduate students, this helps to clarify their qualifications. Also, it's good to know whether the site requires that tutors undergo some type of testing, certification process, or background check. In other words, you want the site to have done as much work to determine how qualified their tutors are as you would when searching for your own. But of course, this one step doesn't necessarily mean that you should trust the site.

Check to See if Site is Secure before Submitting Payment

Now that you've checked the credentials of the site offering services, let's take a look at how secure it is before you agree to submit your personal information and give away credit card details. There are a few ways that you can check the security of a website. One way is to look for the little lock icon located within the web browser. If you click on that icon, you will be granted information regarding the security of the specific site.

The other way is ensure a site starts with "https:" when ready to submit sensitive information - the "s" at the end means it's secure. If you verify the site is secure in these ways, you can feel more comfortable about its trustworthiness.

Is There a Money-Back Guarantee?

A third way to determine whether a tutoring site is trustworthy is by seeing if it offers a money-back guarantee. You want to look for clues the company is willing to take responsibility for your potential dissatisfaction by giving you back the money you paid. While some sites can offer a guarantee and not deliver, if you can find detailed information about the guarantee - a sort of backing that this is actually true - then you may feel more comfortable about spending your money.

If you're still not fully comfortable with a site, you can check with the BBB to see if it's a legit business - and you can also call it directly to make sure people actually work there. By taking these steps to determine a site's trustworthiness, you may feel better about the prospect of Internet tutoring.
