Claroline – Online Learning Application

One of the most signification innovations in the field of science and technology in the present century has been computers and the inception of the internet has further facilitated its importance in human life. In fact today any individual would have no qualms in admitting that computers today comprise on the most crucial sections of their lives and that with growing technological development, human civilization is increasingly becoming dependent on the functioning of technological tools for their sustenance. Since recent times, education had been primarily associated with the traditional mode pf imparting knowledge in a classroom consisting of a handful of students. However, technological discoveries and innovations have currently altered the picture and today online learning is a prevalent activity with some of the major and prominent educational institutions providing online access to many of their flagship courses and thus encouraging the practice of online education. It is to be noted that like normal educational courses, the conclusion of online courses also ensure securing of online degrees. In case of online education, it is to be remembered that there are required certain software applications which provide the basic course management softwares to aid the interaction between the tutors and the students. Claroline is an open source online learning application which enables scores of educational institutions to register and administer their various courses online. Claroline is prominently used in over 80 countries in the world and is available in about 30 languages and the entire application is designed in a way to help the tutors specifically in designing the course and thus it allows efficient course management. Some its functions include development of paths for learning, publishing documents and information in PDF, text, HTML or video format, creation of student groups, creating exercises and assessment patterns for the students and grading them on the basis of their performances, writing of collaborative documents with the aid of wiki, announcements and posting of notices through email, conceiving the course description and assigning projects for the students to be submitted online.

One of the significant advantages of Claroline is that it is possible to download it for free using any web browser of one's choice. The technological formats like MySQL and PHP are used in its composition and it is possible to use Claroline in accordance with the prevalent operating systems like Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It was only recently in 2007 that the Claroline Consortium was formed by certain prominent universities in order to facilitate its development.
