Cleveland Schools Need to Deal With Problem of Violence

The latest statistics on violence in Cleveland schools indicate that incidents are on the rise. Recent incidents involved an assault on a teacher and a principal getting injured while trying to break up a fight. It really shouldn't be all that surprising that violence acts are being committed in Cleveland schools when violence is so prevalent in our society as a whole.

A lot of the entertainment that students attending Cleveland schools are being exposed to has a violent element. Let's face it, it's not as exciting to see a hero (or heroine as the case may be) trying to resolve differences with other people by using reason and logic as opposed to using violence to make their point.

Cleveland Schools Should be a Place of Learning

Everyone associated with Cleveland schools has a part to play in making sure that they are first and foremost places of learning. Violence is not welcome at Cleveland schools, nor should it be tolerated in any form. If the current measures for dealing with the problem aren't working, then it's time to find some new solutions.

Part of the problem in dealing with violence at Cleveland schools is that students don't realize that there are consequences for their actions. We can agree that violence will not be tolerated and try to put a plan in place to combat it, but the plan breaks down when the consequences help to contribute to the problem.

For example, a student assaults someone else on school property and the police are called to intervene. If a portion of the student body considers being arrested to be something "cool," then they aren't likely to be deterred from behaving in the same manner.

Instead, Cleveland schools need to take the time to educate their students about what it means to be arrested and charged with a crime. Having a criminal record means that some doors will remain closed for that person down the road. Perhaps if the students attending Cleveland schools were fully aware of the consequences for their actions, they would stop and think before resorting to violence.

It's not enough for educators at Cleveland schools to teach students what not to do to resolve disputes; the students need to learn better ways to deal with conflict that don't include lashing out at another person. This change won't take place overnight, but the end result will be worth the effort.

Things need to change and Cleveland schools can be an important part of the changes necessary to make all students feel safe and secure while at school. Anything that distracts students from the task of learning needs to be dealt with.
