College across the Street: Safe or Disabling Choices?

Many men – many minds, as the old English proverb says. Thus, when the time to choose a college comes, some young people prefer to leave their native home and start their own mature life far from the influence of parents and surroundings. However, there are some other young people who do not want to change anything in their lives and prefer to remain in their own community to continue education.

Coming Home after College Every Night – a Dream or a Nightmare?

1. When choosing a college near one's home, the individual has to consider some perspective issues that may not reveal themselves at present but are likely to turn out in the near future. In addition, one has to understand whether he or she wants to remain in the home-place for the whole life or has some ambition of moving to a larger city and achieving more in life. All these considerations may affect the decision seriously.

2. The student's family is also a decisive factor in the choice of a college. In case parents are tough and demanding, following the student's progress in studies very closely and limiting his or her freedom in communication and leisure because of average schooling results, it will be much better to choose a more distant college. If parents are liberal, understanding and loving, they may leave the educational field up to the student, thus not impeding on his or her freedom and student life.

3. The measure of closeness of family relationships is also a decisive factor for a college choice nearby. Parents and relatives may be too dear for the student to part with them, and he/she may understand that homesickness will prevent high-quality studies. In such cases it will be better to remain in the home helpful environment to sustain the positive atmosphere of studies and enthusiasm in college life.
