CLEP is an acronym for “College Level Examination Program,” and can be the fastest and cheapest route to a college degree. Although there is not a CLEP test for every subject, such clep exams cover most lower division courses – meaning it's possible to complete your first two years of college without ever having to set foot in a classroom!
This is the beauty of taking advantage of CLEP. It's a Bargain As you know, the cost of a college education in the U.S. has spiraled out of reach for many – and the few who do manage to get there are burdened with debt for the rest of their lives. clep is a loophole that can both lower the cost of a degree as well as help in avoiding accumulating a crushing debt burden. When earned through the successful completion of CLEP exams, college credits can be earned for about a tenth of the cost of regular tuition and fees.
It's Quick A clep test lasts between one and five hours, depending on the subject and the number of credits involved. Although you will probably spend many hours preparing for a CLEP test, the actual test itself allows you to earn a semester's worth of credits in a single morning. It's Personal Responsibility Those who take advantage of CLEP need to be highly motivated and self disciplined. Although there are many web sites and printed materials available that can help you in preparing for CLEP exams, there is no professor holding a grade over your head. You're on your own here, and the rewards are not immediate. The fact is that relatively few young people have the self-discipline and maturity to deal with the conditions of preparing for a CLEP test.
If you are one of them however – or an older adult who missed an earlier opportunity to attend college and wants to catch up – the CLEP test is an excellent alternative to the expense and hassle of traditional classes. Get Credit For What You Know If you grew up in a bilingual household or know a second language reasonably well, CLEP is an ideal way to get that second language requirement out of the way. There is a CLEP test available for virtually every language commonly taught at U.S. colleges and universities, including Spanish, French, German, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. If you are skilled in or have substantial knowledge of other academic subjects – for example, you have worked as a nurse's assistant or as a dental hygienist – you probably have enough knowledge of first-year college biology to “CLEP out” of that subject, so take an inventory of your experience – you might be surpised!
