An essay is the most common form of writing. It is a piece of writing that puts forward a writer’s viewpoint in a simple and easy to follow style. Essays are subjective, non-fictional, narrative or expository in nature. They are not only reflections or recollections of the author, but can also be categorized as deeply read arguments, literary criticisms, political manifestos, and observations of different facets of life.

Essays are generally short pieces of writings. Hence covering all aspects of a subject is rather difficult in the realm of an essay. Perhaps this is the reason why collections of essays covering a particular topic are highly popular. Through this kind of collection the readers are able to get a feel of different aspects of a subject in an interesting manner. Not only this, viewpoints of different authors on the same subject can also be accessed by a collection of essays.

Essays have always been an integral part of our education system. Essay writing is one of the major skills taught to the students from the very beginning of their studies. There is no better way of judging the writing capability and thought process of a student than essay writing. Even the observation, presentation and analytical skills of a person are judged through essays. Universities, select students on the basis of the essay they write.

Essay writing is a daunting task for many. It is very difficult for many students to muster the courage to write an essay. If simple steps are followed, essays can be written effortlessly.

The first step is to decide on a topic. If the topic has already been provided, then the time and effort of selecting a topic gets saved. The next step is to jot down all the ideas related to that topic that comes to your mind. Then choose the most powerful idea from your list of ideas and make it the main point around which your essay should be centred. This should be your thesis statement.

The essay’s first paragraph should be built around the main idea or the thesis statement. The introduction would be ready. Choose the other main points from the list of ideas and elaborate them in separate paragraphs. Write the concluding paragraph, which should cover the gist, or bird’s eye view of what have been said before. Restate the strongest point of your work. Add the finishing touches and your essay is ready. If a word limit has been set then take care to frame the essay within that word limit.

Essays can be categorized into different categories like reflective essay, persuasive essay, history essay, description essay, definition essay, analytical essay university essay, college essay etc. No matter what the purpose and category is, the basic format or structure of all the essays always remains the same.

Essay writing books and WebPages on ‘how to write essays’ are available in abundance. However they can just give a basic knowledge on how to begin, build and end an essay. It is the idea that matters most. This idea can come from nowhere but from you.
