“1. Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
2. In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity,
3. The word of the Lord came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was there upon him.”

Ezekiel (which means “God will strengthen” or “the strength of God”) the priest, the son of Buzi, was captured and carried away to Babylon during King Nebuchadnezzar’s second raid on Jerusalem, circa B.C. 597, with young king Jehoiachin (also called Jeconiah {Jeremiah 24:1;27:20} and Coniah {22:24;37:1}) and thirteen thousand of Jerusalem’s finest citizens (2 Kings 24:12-16;Jer. 52:28).
Ezekiel was from a priestly family, and was a priest and a prophet to the Jewish hostages in Babylon (the land of the Chaldeans). There he had a house at Tel-Abib (Easton’s Bible Dictionary), near Nippur (Ryrie Study Bible, p. 1138), along the river Chebar. He had a wife, who died suddenly in B.C. 587(Ezek.24:16-18). He prophesied for 22or 23 years, overlapping the preaching and prophecies of Daniel, Jeremiah, and probably Obadiah.
Ezekiel’s prophecy spoke of Judah’s sins, as a nation and individually, of the sins of many other nations, and the sins of this world. He holds out hope, in prophecies of divine redemption for all who trust in God and obey His commandments. He refers often to the Pentateuch, and is often referred to in the book of Revelation.
Ezekiel died in captivity and is said to be buried in Baghdad in Iraq.
His tomb is said to be in a neighborhood called Keffil (Easton’s Bible Dictionary).
