? Karl Friedrich Gauss
Born in Brunswick, Germany in the year 1977, he studied mathematics at the University of Gottingen from 1795 to 1798. He has shown willingness and talents during his early age. He even managed business accounts before the age of 5. He even caught payroll mistakes (according to his father). He called mathematics "the queen of the sciences" and arithmetic "the queen of mathematics". Gauss was able to contribute a lot in the world of mathematics namely:the Disquisitines Arithmeticae which brought about the most influential books written in Math; and the law of quadratic reciprocity.
? Maria Agnesi (pronounced on-yay-zee)
Born on May 16, 1978, she is the very first mathematician from Milan, Italy. Her father Pietro was a mathematics professor which comes from a wealthy family. She considers her dad as an inspiration to her pursuit of Mathematics. Maria can speak a thousand words including Greek, Hebrew, French, Spanish and Latin. She is the eldest in the family and when her mother died, she took care of her brother. She taught her brother until she developed a text that became publicized - making her famous. It was the very first surviving work done by a female at the time. She continued studying at the university until the death of her father in 1752. She left math and gave her full attention to helping others, especially the poor, the homeless and the sick.
Born in 1768 in Auxerre, France, he is a French mathematician and physicist. He was the son of a tailor and was born into a prominent family. He was initially trained for priesthood but he turned to Mathematics and became a teacher by the age of 16. Fourier became a professor between the years 1795 and 1798 of Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. His life ended in Paris in 1830 and he never married. His contributions were:
o the 1st correct theory on heat diffusion. It shows how a mathematical series of sine and cosine termas can be used to analyze heat conduction in solid bodies
o The formula x/2= sin x - (sin2x)/2 + (sin 3x)/3 + .... was published by leonhard Euler year 1707-1783
? Joseph Louis Lagrange
Born in 1736 in Italy (Turin, Sardinia-Piedmont), he is considered to be the beginning of Modern Math. He is the oldest of 11 children. He is a self-taught mathematician. By the age of 19, he was appointed as the professor of Mathematics at the Royal Artillery School in Turin. Euler was very impressed with the works of Lagrange titled "Calculus of Variation" that he received 2 offers to work at the prestigious Berlin Academy. He accepted the offer and then moved to Paris Academy of Science where he remained for the rest of his career.
? Pierre de Fermat (pronounced Fair-mah)
Born in August 1601 in Beaumont-de-Lomagne, France, he is considered to be one of the greatest mathematicians of the seventeenth century. Fermat's father was a leather merchant and his mother's family was in the legal profession. In 1631, he took a Bachelor's Degree in civil law from the University of Orleans. He married and had five children. He also practiced law. His contributions were:
o analytic geometry
o probability theory
o optics and provided a law on light travel
o made a few papers about calculus
