Grandparents Can Take the Lead in Homeschooling Children

As some families discover the public school system just is not for them or their children, many parents find it difficult to take the educational lead themselves in establishing a homeschooling program. Whether it is their careers or an inability to teach that get in the way, some are uncovering an incredible resource in grandparents.

All across the country, grandparents are successfully taking the lead in homeschooling their grandchildren. They are finding that this unique opportunity enables them to fulfill their own needs to stay active while it also helps provide a valuable service to the youngsters in their lives.

The benefits of grandparents stepping into the role of teacher are quote profound and include:

Creating an active and rewarding retirement years activity;

Building bonds with their children and grandchildren;

Providing youngsters access to education in a safe and loving environment.

Setting up a homeschooling plan as a parent or grandparent can be a challenge, but it is one that many are discovering is very worthwhile. There are many things to take into account before diving in to teaching a youngster of any age.

Some of the considerations to take into account include:

State laws - While homeschooling is legal in the United States, it is a heavily regulated pursuit. It is imperative to speak with local school district officials and find out what the requirements are for establishing a home-based program. Certain things like curriculum, testing and even state benchmarks for specific ages or grade levels are likely to all come into play.

Ability to communicate with a child - For homeschooling to be successful, grandparents need to have the ability to communicate effectively with their grandchildren. A certain level of respect can also be important as youngsters will have to take the grandparent serious in the new role as teacher in an organized setting.

Your own abilities - Grandparents do not need a teaching degree to perform as the head of a homeschool. They do, however, need to educate themselves about the curriculum and teaching techniques that can help children succeed.

Organization - For homeschooling to be truly successful, a routine must be established that clearly delineates school time from regular home time. The more organized a grandparent is in this regard, the easier the job will be.

The environment - The area of a house or room in which "school" will take place should be conducive for learning. It is best to set aside a particular space for "business."

Other activities and resources - It can be very useful to look into the resources available for homeschoolers in a particular community. Some areas, for example, have coalitions where parents and grandparents help each other teach youngsters certain subjects. For example, a parent who is an expert with English might help children with this area of study and another with math abilities might handle that subject. Also, there are some communities that have organized activities just for homeschoolers, such as orchestras, sporting teams and more.

Homeschooling grandchildren can be a very rewarding pursuit that touches a family in a profound and important way. Diving into this should be handled with both eyes open.
