The freedom that comes with leaving home and going to college can be exhilarating, but don't let it be simultaneously destructive or simply lost time. Once you leave for the campus and are responsible for yourself, you have to balance work, fun, and other life-relevant activities in between. The college experience affords a number of great opportunities that can be missed by the extremes of either studying or relaxing too much.
College life is largely about productivity. In it, there is probably some work you "ought" to be engage in at most times of the day and evening. The only way to accomplish it all and still have time to relax is to use your time wisely. When doing schoolwork, think about the fastest ways you can organize your assignments to complete them with quality work while seeking the best grades. The most successful students in college are not necessarily those who study all the time. Rather, they're the ones who don't waste time and instead use it efficiently.
The old adage "the more you do, the more you get done" is seldom more accurate than in college. The most active and purposeful people also tend to earn the highest grades. Don't simply go to class and hang out with your friends, but become involved in a few of the nearly limitless organizations around campus. Whatever your interests may be, there is likely a group to support, enjoy, or protest them.
If you can't find a representative organization of interest to you on your campus, consider organizing one yourself. Your eventual career may actually come not from simply the completion of your classes, but perhaps more from the skills and connections you make through campus organizations. Leadership in campus organization also looks great on your resume.
Certainly the costs you incur during your college years pay for classes, but they also cover opportunities for participation in school-wide and smaller events. You are afforded the accessibility of lectures, speeches, workshops, concerts, and other events that would otherwise cost a lot of additional money if you did not have them as part of being a student. Celebrities and other well-known people from all walks of life visit college campuses. So do "unknowns" who may turn out to have a significant positive influence on your life.
Become actively engaged in your classes, and get to know your professors. Ask a lot of questions during your classes. If you merely sit there nodding your head or staring forward, you won't be getting your money's worth.
After classes as you have time, approach some of your professors and start discussions relevant to the subject matters they teach. Professors are usually interesting people and can offer intriguing life perspectives that might not normally be evident during class time. Building a relationship with a few of them at your school can also provide you creative opportunities that would not take place otherwise.
Remember, you are paying a high cost for college, so make the most of it. Many people have fond memories of college as the best time of their lives. Take advantage of it while you can.
