Gone are the days when a perfect house meant just two-three rooms covered by a roof in any locality. These days, people are very particular about their houses, both internally and externally. The looks, the design, the decoration, the ambience, the furnishings and every other little detail is given importance to make a house a personalized home. And, with this awareness, the demand for interior designers has also increased manifold. Young creative minds are increasingly opting for this career field by pursuing interior design courses. Many colleges in India and private institutes are catering to this huge demand for interior designers by offering various levels of diploma courses in interior designing.
The job of an interior designer is not just to create a beautiful looking and aesthetically appealing living space but also to create spaces that are functionally sound. They have to come up with design and form solutions that are safe, attractive and meet the needs of the user. They have to be customized and be within the prescribed budget of the customer. The material and items used to decorate the spaces should not be out of place and as per the taste of the user. Thus interior designing courses aim to train and equip the students with awareness and attitude that is needed for this profession. With some creativity and the power of imagination, interior designers can make it big in this field after acquiring formal training.
Other than soft skills, these courses are designed to teach their students the necessary technical knowledge required in this field. Also, students are trained in managerial skills that enable them to find clients and manage them as per their requirements. Thus, it can be said that a successful interior designing career is as much about creativity and artistic imagination as it is about sound managerial skills. Thus, the institutes that offer interior designing courses design the curriculum keeping in mind all these needs. While choosing the course and the institute, it has to be borne in mind that the institute is reputed with experienced faculty and the course covers all essential elements.
There are many degree and diploma courses available for interior designing offered by colleges in India and other private institutes. The most popular courses include B.Sc. (Interior Design), Professional Diploma in Furniture & Interior Design, Master of Interior Architecture and Design and Foundation Diploma in Design. These are the most sought after and pursued courses by students willing to make a future in this field. The eligibility to pursue these courses is minimum qualification of a pass at the 10+2 level. Also, one should have a knack for aesthetics, colors, shapes, sense of style and form. There should also be a basic sense of what is comfortable and what is not. Thus, just the inclination is not enough to be an interior designer. One should also have the ability and flair for design and décor. To become a good interior designer, one must have these skills of which some are innate and some can be acquired. You should also have good time management skills, good coordination and team building skills, a sharp eye for detail, patience, and a keen observation sense.
Interior designers are required not just to decorate houses and residential spaces but also offices and commercial spaces. More and more organizations are now becoming aware of having aesthetically appealing work spaces to keep the environment lively and motivating. Thus, there is a need for interior designers in shops, offices and commercial spaces too. There is no limit to what one can achieve in this field. Once the course and the training is over, one can either work with a housing company, an architect or an established interior designing form. Or, one can also choose to start work individually or a freelance basis. It is advisable to start under an experienced person and firm to learn the tricks of the trade and what all it encompasses. You might realize that the course in interior designing just trains you in the very basic tenets of the profession. The scope and the real requirements are learnt on the job. A lot of improvisation and learning happens while working. There are many exciting career opportunities in eth filed of interior designing after one has completed the course.
