Make a Quiz with MS PowerPoint? Fun and Easy!

MS PowerPoint is really a magic. Not only can you use it to structure a literature course or an enlightening game, but also can you take it to create simple multiple-choice quizzes with feedback or score at the end, just like a professional Flash quiz maker.

The basic quiz design – the Action Settings feature in PowerPoint is necessary, no matter your multiple-choice quiz is expected to be one that gives prompt feedback as to the "right or wrong" issue, or one that adds results to give a single score or multiple scores for several facets. Let’s creep into the detail steps.

Step 1 Create a blank PowerPoint presentation

  • Mine is PowerPoint 2007. First, right-click to create a new PowerPoint presentation. Choose a layout style, color scheme, and put a suitable title on the first slide. Next, go to Home ->New Slide, add a new bullet point slide, and enter the first question as the slide title. After that, add possible answers one by one as separate lines with bullet points.
  • Step 2 Make a basic quiz with instant feedback

Now, let’s enter some text to every page.

Go to View -> Presentation Views -> Slide Master to bring up the display of the background material behind each slide.

Select the Text Box icon from the Drawing Tools (usually at the bottom of the screen) and click and drag a text box. Enter some simple instructions in the box, e.g. "Click on the correct answer to respond. Click here to move to the next slide. Click here to exit".

Highlight the first "here" and press the right mouse button. Select Action Settings -> Hyperlink To -> Next Slide or any other option from if the drop-down list.

Then, highlight the second "here" and use Action Settings again to hyperlink it to End Show. Position the text box at the side or the bottom of the master slide. Click Close to close the master. Now select Header and Footer from the View menu to add a number to each slide. The screenshot shows the results so far. To make it easy, you can give users immediate feedback after each question - right or wrong. This will need two more title slides to the presentation.

Use Home -> New Slide, select the "Title Only" layout. Repeat it again. Give one the title "Correct!" and the other the title "Wrong!". For each of these slides, go to the Slide Show menu and select Hide Slide, so that the slide will be hidden in sequence as part of the quiz.

Finally, add a text box to each of the two slides which says "Return to quiz". Select the words "Return to quiz" on the "Correct!" slide and right-click to bring up a local menu. Click on "Action Settings" and choose the "Mouse Click" tab. Select the Hyperlink to option and choose Last Slide Viewed. Click on OK to close the dialog box.

Repeat the same process on the "Incorrect!" slide. Now return to the question slide and highlight each of the three wrong answers. Right-click and use Action Settings to link it to the "Incorrect!" slide. Highlight the correct answer and use Action Settings to link it to the Correct! slide.

You can create some more questions by using Home-> New Slide or copying your existing question slide. Add a final slide at the end of the show to thank users for their time. Save and run the slide show.

Voila! You have a simple multi-choice quiz in PowerPoint, now try it for fun on your friends. To upload the quiz to YouTube and Facebook,

Unfortunately, in my grade 12 year, a family emergency arose and I realized that being two provinces away was ridiculous and I would only be able to come home twice a year.
