Mass Communication as a Career Option

Mass communication in India has undergone quantum change in the recent past and has grown by leaps and bounds. The advent of various media and the exceptional boost that it has seen in the fields of TV, print, radio, online etc is phenomenal in itself. The industry is growing at an enormous space and has created numerous career opportunities for the young and the talented interested to make an exciting career. The field of mass communication is quite vast and includes more than just the entertainment and news industry. Thus, there are endless exciting jobs that youngsters can take up after pursuing a course in mass communication. There are private and government colleges in India and also other institutes that offer mass communication courses to aspiring students. It is a contemporary field of study.

The study of mass communication encapsulates the numerous means of mass communication that have developed and are still developing. It is through these different means that information is relayed to public. The study of these tools or means is what the study of mass communication is. Since these tools are diverse, the course covers a vast range of medium of mass communication. The concept behind mass communication is that a single message is communicated to large proportions of the population.

Hence, it can be said that mass communication is the study of mass media, which includes various mediums deployed to convey information to a large audience. These tools range from newspapers to magazines to television to radio to online etc. During the mass communication course, a student is given basic knowledge of these mediums and then as per the individual interest and capability, a student can choose to specialize in the field that attracts him/her the most. Once the course is over, there are many job opportunities in the entertainment industry, news media industry, publishing industry or the public relations departments in various companies. One can also find jobs in research institutes.

Mass communication has been a recent revolution in India. There has been a sort of an awakening in this field. Now, people have understood the reach and importance of mass media. The power of media can bring about a lot of changes in the society. If utilized well, mass communication means can easily be considered the fourth pillar of democracy. With such reach and acknowledgement, the media industry has opened up in India to a big extent. Now, people are capitalizing on the use of the various means of mass communication. Thus, there has been a boom in the number of TV channels, radio channels, online websites, advertising agencies, newspapers and magazines being used to disseminate information.

The reach of media is also enormous now. Gone are the days when a TV or a radio was the possession of the elite. Nowadays, these tools have become ubiquitous. They have penetrated to all corners of the country and are giving people a voice of their own. The regional media is becoming as popular as the national media. People want to know and people want to be heard. As a result, the mass communication industry has boomed like never before. With such a boom, there has also been a boom in the career opportunities offered by this industry. There is a plethora of jobs in this field.

Many colleges in India offer three-year degree courses in mass communication. There are also many private institutes offering diploma courses in mass communication. The course duration for these courses varies from one year to three years. Students can also go for specialization in a particular field of mass communication. Good presence of mind and analytical skills are required to make it big in this field. However, before entering this field, one has to understand that it is a demanding career option. The work timings could be punishing and sometimes there are no breaks for long. Recognition and fame also come early for the deserving but considering the competition in this field, there is a lot of mental and physical investment that one might have to do to be successful in this field. One should choose the branch of mass communication carefully depending not just on the interest but also individual competence.
