Nashville Schools John Overton High School Students Honored

Students from the John Overton High School participated in Students Taking Action with Recognition Events at. The Nashville Schools' team included Overton High School graduates Rosa Abernathy, Jontyce Otey, and Brittany Shook. The Nashville Schools team won a gold medal in Focus on Children, one of the sixteen Students Taking Action with Recognition events that Family, Career and Community Leaders of America's 2006 National Leadership Meeting participants can compete. The Nashville Schools team's medal was given to them at special meeting that honored all the participants. The meeting was held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center; more than five thousand guests were in attendance.

The Focus on Children event tests the participants' ability to use family and consumer science skills to create a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community. Students Taking Action with Recognition program is aimed at using cooperative skills to compete. Students and adult members manage and evaluate the events. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is an organization that aims to help young adults develop the ability to deal with personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Nashville Schools has been an active participant in FCCLA for several decades. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America has around 225,000 active members and was established in 1945.

Nashville Schools Maplewood High School Students Win National Essay Contest

Two students from Nashville Schools Maplewood High School have won the Lewis & Clark Expedition National Essay contest. The contestants had to write essays about some aspect of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, for example the affect it had on the nation or the trials the expedition faced. The essays were judged on accuracy, clarity, organization, documentation, and creativity. Maplewood High School students Kayla McNabb and Michael Muncey have won trip to follow a portion of the Lewis and Clark Trail in North Dakota as their prize for writing excellent essays. The winners from Nashville Schools will travel with other essays winners from around the US to Fort Abraham Lincoln, Fort Mandan, several Indian Villages, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Cross Ranch State Park where they will engage in a variety of learning experiences. During the trip students will participate in Native American gardening, tool making and clothing production. They will also see reenactments of US Cavalry tactics of the late 1800's and join in the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Celebration.

11 Nashville Schools Elementary Schools Will Add Pre-Kindergarten Programs this Fall

Eleven Nashville Schools will add new pre-kindergarten classes for 2006-07 school year bringing the total of all pre-kindergarten programs to ninety-two in the Nashville Schools system. These new programs will be funded jointly by the Nashville Schools and the state of Tennessee, each new program will cost approximately $100,000. These new pre-kindergarten programs are designated to serve the low-income populations of the chosen elementary schools. Admission to the new programs will be on a first come first serve basis and registration will be from July 31-Aug. 4.
