Storytelling is an effective tool in making students think and getting them motivated. Stories help the listeners to relate to an idea. Descriptions of events are used to involve the reader.

· Provo Canyon School follows this therapy along with its recreation therapy. There are particular stories that are used to provide the message. For instance, one story is about the metamorphosis of a butterfly.
· A mother butterfly watches her child struggling in a pupa. The mother, in sympathy for the child, makes an opening in the pupa. The child butterfly emerges without any struggle, only to finds its wings under developed. A butterfly has to struggle alone in the pupa to gain wing and body strength.
· The message in the story is for Provo Canyon School students. Work hard and do not depend on others. Stories can captivate you, educate, give information, cause discussions and make you think. They relate to you in various ways.
· Storytelling has been used to form a bond between parents, students, teachers and staff at Provo Canyon School. Specialized storytellers can help immensely.
· The stories could be enacted with students playing the parts of the characters. Metaphors, explanations or descriptions of stories help in associating the story with the listeners better.
· Emotion has the ability to affect various areas of the brain. Any interruption can affect the thought process.
· Therefore a story should focus on positive points and provide examples of overcoming hurdles or problems.
· Studies have concluded that emotional changes do occur when reading a book, watching a movie or a TV program. You feel sad, happy, excited, horrified in the space of minutes.
· Emotional changes as varied and changing are welcome in a storytelling session at Provo Canyon School.
· The storytelling concept is not new. It has been used before in preventing disease, countering tragedy, in improving health. Additionally, it is used in healing, as in the case of Provo Canyon School.
· The emphasis is not only in creating meaningful stories, but also how it unfolds that students are attracted to it.

What are some good Algebra 2 courses?
By: Readinglover33 | 10-07-2008
I am looking for a good and clear Algebra 2 course. I have tried an online course with live teachers, but I need something with longer time limits, meaning something I can work on at my own pace. Something online is preferred, but if anyone knows of a book that explains Algebra 2 well, then that is just as fine. I do not like Saxon math, because it gets too complicated for a student to be reading on his own. Suggestions greatly appreciated!
