StudentScholarships.org - Selecting my College Major is a huge decision

The most important choice that I will or have to make in order to be happy and successful is the one of what I want to do in my life, my major. Nowadays, many young people are negatively influenced or even forced by their parents to do something that they do not really like. This is the case in many African countries were parents have a lot of impact in the future and the career of their children. As a young African lady, I have seen a lot of people experiencing this situation. I truly believe that the choice of one’s career or major should be the result of a thorough thinking and one’s desire.

Many students change their major many times because they realized, after some years in college, that they do not want to spend the rest of their life doing what they had first chosen. Also, some people actually complete their entire program in a field that they thought they liked, start working for a couple of years, and then realize that they are not happy with their current life and go back to school to learn a new profession. I think that this is really unfortunate to spend a lot of money getting a degree in a field that you will happen to dislike. For these reasons, I think that people and I have to really consider and know that we have to choose something in which we would be happy to spend the rest of our lives.

Another fact is that when people choose to do something they really like, they are more determined to learn and be successful in what they are doing. For example, if I do not excel or even doing poorly in something I do not really like, it would be much easier for me to give up. On the other hand, I would do every thing and keep doing my best for some field that I truly like.

In conclusion, I will be really content and determined to succeed in doing something that I certainly like.
