Success tips for teaching children in emergency and crisis circumstances
The issue of education in emergency and crisis situations has gained increasing importance due to the growing number of emergency cases over the past years around the globe. Generally, emergency education programmes are implemented as a response to extreme crisis conditions that require special attention, associated to a process of planning for future educational development.
Emergency situations, typically caused by armed conflicts, natural disasters or chronic crises, deprive many children from their fundamental right to education and the benefits from the stabilizing and comforting school environment. The need for effective strategies and mechanisms on a global, regional and country level is urgent, requiring a wide cooperation of various partners.
Teaching children in emergency situations is an intricate task. Many educators face classroom behavior problems deriving from the traumatizing situations that the children have experienced. Many children suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and demonstrate violent behavior against other students or even against their teachers. These, often extreme, behaviors prevent effective education in the crowded classroom and teachers need to be able to control the classroom’s discipline.
One effective way is to keep children interested with cartoon characters naming body parts, clothes, family trees, places and so on and create a picture dictionary. Children love cartoons and they always forget about anything else when they watch cartoons on TV. Unfortunately, children on a state of emergency cannot enjoy TV, but they can enjoy a teacher who comes up with innovative ideas and is able to make up cartoon booklets where children can color and add background and paint their favorite cartoons.
Another major consideration that is important for any classroom, but particularly for children in emergency and crisis circumstances, is that they need to feel genuine concern. Teachers need to let their students know they care. Although the circumstances are what a teacher would expect in any other classroom due to the children’s traumatic experiences, psychology is extremely important. To succeed in what they do, teachers need to determine with their students the limits of accepted behavior and show interest in what the children say, think, and are concerned about, whether or not it pertains directly to the lesson.
For the restoration of the education system as a result of an emergency situation, the educational sector requires a considerable reform as follows:
- Immediate repair of school buildings
- Regularizing teaching staff to conduct classes.
- Mobilizing students for attending classes and thereby reducing dropouts
- Making special arrangements for teaching and learning materials.
- Providing students with educational kits including books as per the suggested syllabus
- Motivating parents to ensure that their children are attending schools regularly
- Making arrangements for reducing the trauma sustained
- Providing children with leisure facilities and opportunities
- Ensuring fullest co-operation of the concerned communities
- Waiving educational fees be waived.
Moreover, emergency education should be a priority. The civil society groups who are responsible for the revival of the educational system need to have governmental support to rebuild schools, infrastructure, and provision for supplementary feeding in school. Considering the significance of education in addressing the psychosocial need of children in crisis circumstances, the right to education must be highly prioritized in the governmental measures.
Overall, teachers need to make learning fun, interesting and relevant to the children’s lives. Children who live in emergency and crisis circumstances need to take out of their system all what they have experienced. They have the need to deal psychologically with the conditions they are growing up and understand what has happened to them. A good teacher should be able to praise them for surviving the horrible conditions, for being strong and fighters, and determined to learn and open their minds. Assisted by a good curriculum, good teachers will praise good behavior and good work to help these children to alleviate the suffering and improve their future conditions.
