If you're like almost every college student since time began, you're strapped for cash at the beginning of the semester (and most every time before and after). So, you may be looking for ways to tighten your belt. If that's the case, you should consider buying your textbooks for the semester used. Used textbooks are cheaper and widely available from students who trade them each semester (a WAY better deal for you as they get very little back for their trade).

Here are a few tips for making the most of your used book purchases:
* Get your required textbook list as soon as possible so you can look for sources of used books. Both the bookstore and any online finds will be limited, so start early!
* Skip the middleman (read: overpriced bookstore) and look online! The Internet is a great place to find the books you need. Some sites even have auction-style sales to keep things interesting and get you the books you need for less money. And, don't forget sometimes your books may be available from international sources, at a greatly-reduced rate!
* If you're shopping online, know exactly what you're buying. Many online bookstores do not allow returns of used books.
* Keep in mind you'll need to use the book all semester, so, you'll want one that's still legible and not falling apart. Don't buy a book that looks like it was manhandled by a bunch of kindergarten art students to save a buck.
* Be sure to check with your professors to ensure the edition you're purchasing used is the same one you'll be using in class. This is important, especially for lectures and assignments when specific pages are referenced that may be different from one edition to another.
* Don't buy one book for two people. Just because you and your roommate are in different sections of the same class, with the same textbook, doesn't mean you don't each need your own book. You may want to mark it up, highlight it etc. and it will make studying for exams tough if you're sharing.
While it's not always possible, buying used textbooks can save you as much as 50% off the original cost of the book. And, with the cost of textbooks these days, that can really add up.
