The Costs of Private Boarding Schools

Some of us may think a boarding school is only for the children of wealthy parents. And it's true that some boarding schools are expensive with fees as high as $10,000 a month. But it's also true that some boarding schools charge only a tenth of that amount.

There are things every parent should consider when choosing a boarding school. Obviously the cost is an important factor. But why is there such a variation in the fees being charged? Well that's fairly easy to explanation.

Let's take location. A boarding school in a large city will have more property taxes to pay. A boarding school in the country will have lower property taxes and far more countryside for the benefit of the students. But being far from town means the expense of transportation for school excursions will be higher. Or it might mean some excursions just won't be offered. To balance that though is that in town, the students won't be able to wander the wide open spaces found in a rural setting. There may not be much grass in an inner-city boarding school.

Then the parents need to examine the services being offered for the costs being charged. What type of therapy is offered by the school? How often is it provided? Are the therapy sessions one on one or in a group session? The old saying that you pay for what you get applies here. If your teen needs specialist help and plenty of it, that needs to be taken into account. You won't get extensive quality treatment unless you pay for it.

There are at least two cost factors you should consider and they are insurance and scholarships. Many insurance companies offer cover for parents who send their child to a boarding school. Teens in trouble need specialist care and this is recognized by some insurance companies. Check out the policies on offer.

And then there are scholarships offered by many schools. What are the conditions and how can you apply? And don't forget that some schools offer loans or part payment options as well.

If after all this you are thinking that the costs do not justify the service, you should think about two important facts. (a) The health and well being of your child and (b) the savings you will make at home.

If your child has learning difficulties or is in trouble and needs therapy, sometimes the best or even the only option is to place your child in the appropriate boarding-school. You may not have a choice if you want your son or daughter to do well.

And if your teen leaves home for some time to attend a boarding school, you will definitely save money. There is the food, electricity, allowance and whatever else a teen needs. As the boarding schools costs cover full board and tuition, you will need to calculate what you save before worrying about the new cost of tuition.

The costs of any boarding school need to be assessed in light of the benefits on offer and the lifelong character building skills they provide for your child.
