In the United States, Hilary Clinton is the woman pioneer of the 21st Century. Ms Clinton has paved the way for women to enter the higher echelons of the political arena. Battle for Vice-President could well be fought in the female arena.
The female hand rocks the nation. Once again this may be proven to be true in the 21st Century political arena, where more and more women are mobilizing behind female candidates.In order to succeed in the polls, Obama should consider electing a female for the Vice-presidency, according to political writer Douglas Drenkow. This should lessen the impact should McCain choose to follow suit.
Undeterred by the rising trends of the 21st Century, lying to the South West Pacific is the secluded tropical island paradise of Vanuatu. One time voted in 2006 as the “Happiest Country on the Earth”. This small tropical island thrives on heavily male dominant society, whereby it is rare for a woman to achieve high ranking chiefly or political status.
In one traditional community found in a group of small islands known as Shepherds, it is acknowledged through the matrilineal hierarchy that by birth or matrimonial right a woman may be bestowed this prestigious status. It was therefore an unprecedented move, when the National Council of Chiefs acknowledged the late Grace Molisa, from the island of Ambae, as a personage of high status, both in the cultural and political arenas. Especially where on Ambae this is never heard of.
Following in her aunt’s footsteps, Jenny Ligo, also from Ambae, has become the second woman to have been bestowed with this high status by the Chairman of the Vanuatu National Council of Chiefs, Chief Paul Tahi. Previously CEO for the Vanuatu National Council of Women, Jenny was, bestowed this prestigious status after performing a grueling 11 pig clubbing ceremony to commemorate her marriage to her husband, Joe Ligo, in 2007.
A mirror image to the Hilary legacy, Ms Ligo does not only have the Ambae chiefs to back her, but has gained the support of the women of Ambae and other islands.
In 2006 Vanuatu was voted the “Happiest Country on Earth’. Vanuatu people with their deep cultural and traditional societies rely on three basic elements for healthy living. Romance, Adventure and the Security of Freedom of Choice.
The first two are easily achieved in this adventure travel paradise, yet there is uncertainty in the lives of today’s younger female population with regards to the Security of Freedom of Choice.
Free education is but a dream in Vanuatu, and the lack of government recognition by way of social welfare programs, means that the meager income generated is invested in the education of the boys.
The harsh reality then is a woman’s destiny lies in her own hands. Etched deep within is their rich cultural norms and value, yet a vast majority lack any formal qualifications.
Where many of the islanders live on under $1 per day, young girls miss out on the opportunity to become educated. As peer pressure of the 21st Century escalates around them, young girls find themselves in a life scarring situation, as was the case of the 16 year old girl, who was attacked by two youths as she was walking home from work.
Under age employment is illegal under the Labor Laws of Vanuatu. Without proper education, most rural communities are ignorant of the legal ramifications.
There is a growing restlessness in the younger generation, who are demanding the right to an education. The right to become qualified leaders for their country.
In late 2007, the government admitted that it does not have the finances to provide free education. Statistics have changed little since 1999.
The horrendous consequences of this are:
• only 55.8% of Vanuatu kids will get to grade 6;
• of those only 18.2% will go to high school;
• 26% will never go to school at all.
YouMe Support Foundation is one of the few charities raising funds for these educationally challenged youths. Their Child Trust Fund provides non-repayable high school education grants to the children of the Outer Islands. Children who will never have the opportunity to see the inside of a high school classroom.
Through her courageous performance of the pig clubbing ceremony and the acquisition of a recognized prestigious status, Jenny Ligo has become the icon of HOPE in the lives of these far fetched communities.
