A tarpaulin or ?tarp? for short is a large sheet of cloth cover made from a water resistant or waterproof material. Original tarpaulins consisted of a cotton base cloth material. This material was impregnated with tar for water resistance. Most modern tarps are made from a polyester material coated with latex or PVC, largely due to cost effectiveness and also strength and longevity gains. Most tarps come with lined holes along the sides of the cloth, so the tarp can be either tied down or suspended with rope. Tarpaulins are sometimes called ?bashas? (derived from a Malay word meaning ?shelter?) or ?hoochie? (including ?hootchie? or ?hootch?), stemming from the Japanese word ?uchi? (meaning ?house?). English-speaking soldiers used this word when referring to makeshift shelters consisting of only a tarp. Tarps have a variety of uses. Tarps are often used to protect objects and items from wind, rain or sunlight. Tarps are often employed onto baseball fields to protect the grass from heavy rainfall. Tarps are also used as groundsheets and flies (the outer layer of a tent) in camping. Tarps with camouflage color schemes are often used by hunters and campers, while the military uses tarp covered with camouflage foliage specific to their area of operation. Cotton tarps were the traditional type of tarp used before the advent of polyethylene materials. Cotton tarps are more vulnerable to rot and mildew, plus they are also heavier when wet, but the associated swelling usually closes up any minute holes in the fabric, meaning that wet cotton is more waterproof than dry cotton. Some tarps sold today are not of the traditional fabric variety, but instead consist of a laminate of woven polyethylene plastic sandwiched with sheets of polyethylene material. This material is often known as polytarp. Polytarp resists stretching and is waterproof. With UV treatment, polytarp can last for years of exposure to the elements. If left untreated however, the material will quickly lose its strength, flexibility and water resistance when exposed to sunlight. Unlike canvas tarp, polytarp can melt and burn more readily unless properly treated with a flame retardant. Polytarp can also be treated to resist electrostatic charge, making it a good choice for protecting static-sensitive equipment. Polytarps are available in a variety of colors, the most common colors being blue and green. Polytarp is a popular source of inexpensive tarp fabric. Polytarp is often used by amateur sailboat builders for making sails. It is possible to create a polytarp sail for a small sailboat by using certain types of adhesive tape. As a result, no sewing is required. Perforated PVC tarp is used for scaffolding protection, as well as large format advertisements. The perforations can range from 20% to 70% and aid in reducing wind vulnerability. Mesh tarps, also called shade cloth, are often used in applications requiring light shade and good airflow. Mesh tarps are often reinforced with a vinyl laminate to provide exceptional strength and protection from rot and mildew. Mesh tarps are popular in the nursery and landscape industry and are also used for the top and sidewalls of backyard canopies, cabanas and market display booths.
