Through the year we also focus on teaching the children their letters and begin developing their language. We use the Alpha-Friends letter and language program, it helps us teach the children to identify the letters and beginning sounds. The children love it and they really learn the letters, sounds and beginning sounds to words. We also write our letters, write words and use a variety of hands on curriculum to teach the children. We begin with Andy Apple and end with Zelda Zebra.
For our mathematics, we use the Saxon Math program and that focuses on math concepts such as patterns, graphing, time, ordinal numbers, sequencing and simple addition. We not only do lessons with the math concepts, we also work on writing the numbers, counting and identifying. We expose the children to hands on activities like gluing, cutting, and matching to help teach the children the value of numbers. Using hands on materials also allows children to develop their small motor skills and hand to eye coordination skills which are needed to develop motor memory. We work towards the children counting to 30 and to be able to identify through 30 as well.
