Tourism in Meghalaya - a Special Feature

Tourism is an attraction of the Government of Meghalaya: Tourism has been able to draw the attention of Government of Meghalaya, a lot of progressive features are marked in this sector. A few places were developed as the places of tourist interest.
The Directorate of Tourism: The Directorate of Tourism, with its office at Shillong, has opened an information centre. It has two will furnished and fully furnished Bungalows which are situated on a hillock over looking the foothill grounds. The state also owns three star hotels in this town.
Luxury coaches and cabs are also maintained by the Directorate of Tourism, conducting tours around the town are regularly.
Restaurants cum Guest Houses: Restaurants cum Guest Houses have been established in order to meet the residential and lodging needs of the tourists visiting the state. The Restaurant cum Guest Houses at Cherrapunjee and the Drive in Restaurant in at Nongpoh are some of the good examples.
Potentiality for the betterment: Meghalaya is a beautiful state, one of the most beautiful in the whole country. It has abundant potential for the betterment of tourism as industry. It has a number of alluring natural sites and landscapes and wonderful natural features.
At and Around Shillong: There are many places which can draw the attention of the tourists. At and around Shillong only, the visitors can enjoy the sight seeing near world's lake, Shillong peak, Shilling Centenary Monument, Sweet Falls, Iewaduh, lady Hydri Park, Spread Eagle Falls, Botanical Gardens, State Assembly Premises. State Central Library, Umain Water Sports Complex Quinton hall, Governor's Summer residence and Seng Khasi Hills.
At Around the Garo Plateau: The visitors enjoy themselves of variegated attractive places around the Garo plateau namely Imilehang Dar-e, Tarek lake, tura Peak, Dalu Monument, Bhaitbari, Kata Beel, Siju Cave, Darge of Hazrat Shah Kamal Baba, Nokrek, Williamnagar, Jumla's Tomb, Arabela, Rongbang Dare, Mahadeo Hill, Tura Collector's Residence and Asanangre.
At Jaintia Plateau: The Jaintia Plateau also has a number of tourist spots, viz, Dowki Bidge, Jawmusing, Kiang, Nangbah Monument, Rupasor, Bathing Ghat, The Shrines of our Lady of Good Health. Tale Falls, Stone Bridge at Thlumuwi Lubha Bridge, Nartiang Temple, ialong, Syndai Caves, Syntu Ksiar, Thadeashian Lake, Summer Place of Jaintia Kings, Barghat Temple, Litein Vley, Umhang, Waikhyrwi, Nartiang monoliths, mawkynden, Lechaka, Sutinag Fot, Menjubel, Ka Dur U, jumai.
Around Khasi Plateau: the places places of tourists, attraction around the Khasi plateau are Noh kalikai Falls in Cherrapunjee, the Rural Crematoria, Kremumarai, mawsmai Caves, Hairpin Bends, Lum aitong, Diengui Peak, cum Sohptbaneng, Mawshynrut, Rilang Hat, Mawphlang, Mawsmai, Smit, Noongsawlia Presbyterian Church, Ranikar, Dwarksuid, Kyllang Roack, David Scoat Path, Scared Forest Mawplang, Cherrapunjee, U.Yirat Singh Memmorial, Dain Jakrem and Mawthadrasan.
Beautiful Hills and Mountains: Meghalaya remains a attractive place because of its beautiful hills and mountains, alluring valleys and natural landscapes. At certain places, various roads cress one another and pass through the areas of scienic beauty worth more than a pause.
Important towns: The important towns of Meghalaya are Shillong, Tura, Jowai and Cherrapunjee. All of them are connected by road to Shillong and Guwahati.
Religious and historical places: There are few religious and historically important places in Meghalaya.
1. Rongringiri: It is situated near Williamnagar town where the Garos had fought the last historic battle against the British in 1872.
2. Rajasimla: The first Baptist Christian Church was established here by the American Baptist Mission with the help of the Garos converts, viz, Omid and Ramke.
3. Yasek Wari: It is a beautiful natural lake.
Shillong: The Capital of Meghalaya: As the capital of Meghalaya and an outstanding hill station of the state, Shillong is located at an altitude of 4,908 feet above the sea level. It is connected with Guwahati by, motorable roads, 102 km in distance. There is a fine road connecting Shillong, the capital of the state with Silchar. It passes through Kowai- Badarpur road.
