Walk This Way
Walkways, entrances, lobbies, or arcades. Call them what you will, but each is a variation of the other. Well, they started out the way didn't they? Now though, they have each come to have their own meaning, which are:
Arcade:
Today, the term arcade is most commonly used to describe a place which is filled with arcade games. Arcade games are coin-operated entertainment machines, and are usually installed in public places. Examples you might be familiar with include, pinball machines, and video games (like Pac Man). There are also machines that you can sit in (like a spaceship) or dance on and control with your feet.
Gallery:
A gallery is a space where people can easily observe something. For instance, in medicine, a gallery would be the upper room from where doctors can watch surgeries. This is a method for young surgeons to lean how procedures are done. In everyday, colloquial language, when people say gallery they usually mean a centre of art. Such spaces come in a variety of sizes and are run by art lovers and collectors, who generally organize the works into curated collections.
Mall:
When someone says that they are going to the mall, it means that they are going to the shopping mall. Shopping malls became popular retail spots in North America a number of years ago. They tend to be a mish mosh of designer and everyday shops. Bringing together so much retail under one protective roof offers a big opportunity to brands. But malls are more then just a shopping experience for Americans. They are a place where teenagers hang out, go for meals, and see films, as most of them have cinemas as well.
Piazza:
A piazza is an open square or public place in a city or town. There are many piazzas in Italy. The Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy is one of the country's most well-known piazzas. Together with the Pizzetta (little Piazza) this urban space is the most religious and political part of Venice. The Spanish Steps in Rome are another famous meeting centre. They were built to connect the Spanish Embassy of the Vatican with the French church Trinita de Monti.
Boardwalk:
Boardwalks are promenades made of wooden boards, usually along the beach. People like to ride their bikes, rollerblade, or go for walks along boardwalks. They can be extremely popular and romantic settings. They can also be very dangerous places to visit. With big, open, public spaces comes an increased probability of people using it as a place to mess around.
Lobby:
Lobbies are the entrance areas in buildings. Hotel and office building lobbies are often very comfortable places, accommodated with big leather chairs, and sometimes, a bar or café.
