Online degree programs are not the ideal choice for everyone. Some students perform better in traditional environments where they can receive the lectures, materials, and assistance directly from teachers. Online degree programs also reduce the interaction among fellow students, as most of the correspondence is conducted online. This can be a bit too impersonal for some students who need that live interaction.
Online degree programs are largely self-directed. By that, I mean that these programs are designed for a student who is disciplined enough to direct studies himself or herself, obtain the key learning objectives for the course, and glean any information that might be suitable based on that individual’s learning goals. The feedback is often limited, but quite useful, and grades are less important than the development of skills that will be essential for future success.
Be wary of those schools promising an online degree with little to no effort on your part. These programs are likely just out to take your money, and will prove worthless if you use that degree to obtain an advanced position or to pursue additional educational opportunities. Any worthwhile degree program will require substantial work and commitment from the student. Here is a short list of what to expect and prepare for:
- Be prepared to set aside time on a daily basis for coursework. Try to avoid distractions (television, telephone, or family members) whenever possible. A quiet room set aside as an office or study would be ideal.
- Do plan on having less time for your family. Let your family know why you are pursuing this program, and maintain communication with them so that you do not alienate yourself completely (which can be easy to do).
- Do plan on reading extensively. Prepare for quite some time spent in front of the computer. A personal suggestion would be to set aside time to visit the library once per week to get you away from the computer for a short time and provide an alternative source for research materials.
- Hone your writing skills, as you will be using them considerably for the coming months or years. If you are just beginning on your educational adventure, you will be afforded classes that will help you with your writing skills. As a graduate student, you will likely be expected to have advanced writing abilities.
- Your computer is your lifeline to your classroom. Make a contingency plan and test the viability of this plan over the course of your studies. If you are just beginning an online degree program, I might suggest purchasing a new computer, as this will remove any uncertainty related to your computing hardware and software at the onset.
An online degree can be an extraordinarily satisfying learning experience for many working adults. While there will certainly be challenges, the rewards upon graduation are far greater. Preparing for your journey towards your online degree will be vital towards success.

How Does an Online Degree Help in the Real World?
By: Keith Londrie | 22/01/2008 | EducationIt is a common scene between us that when a student completes high school he/she starts preparing for getting an admission in a graduating school. They start preparing for entry tests and admissions. They also strive for part time or reasonable jobs which they can do to support there education career. Some students seek loans to pay their academic dues and then work to pay off the debts. The situation gets threatening when the debts start to meddle up there academic career. Sometimes students have to put a stop to there education as well.
Disadvantages of Online Education
By: Keith Londrie | 22/01/2008 | EducationTill now all I have done is talk about the benefits of online education; all that it gives us for less money. All we can acquire by just sitting at the ease of our houses. But as we all know nothing comes without a disadvantage. If something gives you benefits and comfort, it must somewhere have something that is not that beneficial and can be a little bit hurting. Everything has a cost to it. So does online education.
Online Education~ a Brief History
By: Keith Londrie | 21/01/2008 | EducationMoving back in the time zone to a couple of decades earlier, how do you see a person who has earned a bachelors degree? He or she may be in their early twenties; staying in a hostel or near the university with parents sending the term fees. All the student had to do was go to the university every morning, attend classes all day, make projects and assignments, come back to their accommodation in the evening and prepare for the next day. Even this was only possible for those who could afford to pay the University dues in time and had some one back at home to do the earning. In earlier days student who didn’t have enough financial assistance had to give up school and earn their livelihood. Going to college and acquiring a degree turned out to be a dream that never seemed to be fulfilled. Once stuck into the fulfilling the needs of shelter and food, education never got its turn. Work and education could not walk side by side.
Technology and Online Education
By: Keith Londrie | 21/01/2008 | EducationI guess it isn't difficult now to relate technology with online education. Online education has grown from an infant to a teenager and then to an adult along with the growth of technology. Now is the time when even the traditional "brick and mortar" principle following schools are implementing technology in their teaching methods. Technology is the building brick of the online education system. It enhances the capabilities of an online institution in imparting education more effectively and efficiently.
Online Education ~ 3 Important Factors
By: Keith Londrie | 18/01/2008 | EducationNo one wants to stop the process of learning. Online education provides excellent opportunities to continue education at ones own ease. Studying was never that convenient before. However as online education is a much newer concept, students have a lot of questions in mind. Three of the most troublesome questions are answered below.
Accreditation and Afflilations
By: Keith Londrie | 17/01/2008 | EducationAccreditation can be termed as a validation of online and traditional education institutes against pre determined standards set by the Education Board. Accreditation gives an idea of the educational standard of the institutions. Affiliation on the other hand is the process in which some big University allows a smaller institution or college to teach courses complying to the standards of he University.
