3D Digital Cameras

Digital cameras which can take 3D images might seem straight out of science fiction, however that is not the case. Not just because the technology for taking 3D images already exists, but also because the technology is simpler than most people understand.

3D or more accurately the illusion of three dimensions is very easy to achieve, and now we have camera available to consumers for this very purpose. One might think that a 3D camera would have to somehow capture a scene from all angles and locations, and a real 3D "scanner" would be something like that, however a what a 3D camera really does is to use the same mechanism our eye uses to capture images, which is to capture it from two angles.

A 3D camera will come with two lenses and sensors which capture the same shot from two different angles which are similar to the angles from which our eyes perceive things. Now if we capture one image for the right eye and one for the left, and then display those images to each eye individually, what we will see is an illusion of depth to the image.

An adventurous person could try to achieve the same effect as a 3d camera by capturing the same image from two angles using two Digital Cameras, or by taking the same shot from two angles. These techniques will allow you to take decent 3D shots of stationary or very slow moving objects, however to take proper 3D images you need a 3D camera.

Currently there are very few 3D cameras available for consumers, however an example of a recently launched camera targeted towards the general audience is the FujiFilm FinePix 3D W1 camera. As 3d photography becomes more popular though, you can expect to see more camera which allow consumers to take 3d pictures.
