Choosing a tumble dryer

When it comes to choosing a dryer there are a number of different options, so the homeowner needs to keep a few things in mind.

The first thing that needs to be looked at is the space where the dryer is going to be located. If this is going to be a replacement for an existing unit, measurements should be taken so a similarly sized model can be purchased. If it is going next to an existing washer, it will look odd if it is a completely different style of size. The hookups should also be taken into consideration. If this is a replacement, there will more than likely be the hookups for the venting and electricity. If these are not in place, they should be installed by a professional.

Take into consideration the amount of washing that is currently being done in the house. If there are a lot of family members who generate a lot of laundry, a larger capacity dryer should be considered. On the other hand, if it is an apartment for one person, having a larger sized dryer will basically be wasteful.

Tumble dryers come in different styles. These can be a vented tumble dryer or they can be a condenser model. The vented style is the most common and most popular. When the clothes are being dried, damp air is blown out of the house through a hose and a vent that is on an outside wall. For these units to be placed, they need to be near an outside wall. Having a long vent hose can be a fire hazard and is not recommended.

Some houses and apartments cannot accommodate this, so the condenser models are the best solution in this circumstance. These models collect the water from the damp air while the clothes are being dried. This water is then removed after the load is done or can sometimes be routed to the washer through a discharge hose. These units can be more expensive than the vented ones, but are sometimes the only option.

In small apartments or rental properties, space is at a minimum. In these instances, the washer dryer combinations are used. This is basically a small dryer stacked on top of a small washer. They can fit easily into a closet or cramped space. These will use a wet condenser set up that takes cold water to dry the clothes. There is no need to vent the dryer or empty a water collection tank. These will use more energy, but are sometimes the best option for a cramped space.

By looking at the needs of the family and the space where the dryer is going to be placed, a decision on the right dryer to purchase should come easily.
