Choosing The Right Inverter For Your Needs

One of the most common problems encountered by those using off grid power systems is that they find out later that their systems can not handle the amount of power needed by their appliances. Often, the problem lies not not with the electricity generating system, but with the power inverter that delivers this to the appliances.

Thus, it is important that you know how to choose the correct inverter for your needs. But for those new to setting up independent power systems, this can be quite complicated. And so, here is a quick guide that you can use when buying your power inverters.

One of the first things that you need to sort out is the amount of power that you need to run your appliances. Here, you need to get the the power ratings of all the equipment that you intend to connect to the inverter. This can be done by simply looking at the specified wattage of the appliances. You then add up the watts to determine the total number of watts needed for all your appliances and the output range for your inverter.

Of course, you need to remember to put an overhead on your inverter. This will allow you to add new equipment later on without having to make adjustments. The actual amount of additional wattage will be determined by several factors, but you can get a good picture by deciding on which pieces of appliances you are likely to add or change in the near future. For a 500 watt power need, for instance, a 600 watt inverter would suffice in most applications.

You are also probably wondering about whether to get a pure sine inverter or a modified sine wave inverter. A lot of people would not be familiar with the difference between the two, but this one is definitely crucial when choosing power inverters. The actual differences are rather technical, but in simple terms, a pure sine wave inverter has an electrical output that is almost identical, in terms of wave characteristics, to the one that is produced at the power grid. Modified wave inverters, on the other hand, have a slightly different output.

So what's the deal with them then? For most port, non actually. You can run most ordinary electrical appliances on either. But if you are using some highly sensitive equipment, such as laser printers, fax machines, or even garage door openers, you might want to use a true since wave inverter for that purpose.
