The contrast ratio of a television is a measure by which the luminance of the display is measured. It is the ratio of the brightest colour to the darkest - this normally equates to measuring white against black. A higher number is a desired feature of any television and is thought that the higher the contrast, the better the picture achievable, but there are various means by which to arrive at the value. Also values between different manufacturers are not necessarily comparable due to a number of variables that are changeable (measurement, operation, and other unstated variables).
There are 2 main methods for measuring the contrast ratio of a system. The first is by using full on/full off method, which essentially cancels out any effect the test room may have, and typically gives higher values but does not necessarily represent a "real world" scenario. The second method for testing is using a checker board pattern where both black and white luminosity values are measured simultaneously. This second test method is a certified ANSI (American National Standards Institute) test method.
Plasma displays are often considered to have deeper black levels and therefore have higher contrast ratios than competing television technologies.
