Diesels Exhaust Fluid or DEF is an additive to diesel fuel that reduces its NOX (nitrous Oxide Emissions).
For certain types of diesel engines made during or after 2010, this must be added to the fuel.
DEF is a bit more corrosive and sensitive to impurities than standard auto shop fluids like motor oil, gear oil or Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). In other words, you can't just take the spare pump, hose reel and dispensing nozzle you have and use it for DEF. The DEF will corrode and erode the seals leaving behind two negative results.
The first is corrosion I the DEF itself. As noted earlier, DEF is susceptible to corrosion and specifically will not perform when not in a pure state. The second is that you will eventually have a leak. We all know how costly and dangerous fluid leaks on the shop floor are.
To avoid these dangers when buying a hose reel to handle DEF, you will need to buy one that is designed to handle DEF.
It is simply a matter of chemical compatibility for the hose reel manufacturer. They need to make rubber seals and the metal fluid path of the hose reel out of material that is compatible with DEF. That being said, most hose reel manufacturers do not offer such a reel. Without a hose reel that has proper chemical compatibility it is not a matter of if you will have a costly and dangerous leak, it is a matter of when you will have such a leak.
There are some manufacturers, Liquid Dynamics and Cox reels to name a few that make hose reels to handle DEF. make sure when you buy your reel that it is DEF compatible. Some manufacturers will tell you that you do not need a special reel. Be wary of those claims. The old adage, "an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure" if very applicable here.
Once you decide on which reel to buy, shop around local vendors and internet retailers for the best price.
