This article is going to look at the main games consoles on sale today, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. By reading this article, I hope that you will better understand each console and be better informed to choose the one best suited to you. I will talk first about the PlayStation 3 from Sony.

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 is often talked about as the most serious games console. Games are perhaps more narrowly targeted to young males than those available for the Wii for example.

The PS3 is the only console with a BluRay disc drive. This ability is a big selling point for many as it means that the console can be used in the living room as a full entertainment system.

PS3 owners can use the online store to search for games and movies and directly download them over an internet connection to the consoles hard drive. Among the available titles are many games from the PS2, and the old favourites from that system are very popular. A final point to mention is that of the three main consoles, the PS3 is generally the most expensive.

Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005. It was the first of the three consoles I am discussing to be released. In the middle of 2010, an updated slim version was released. It is now the only one on sale. Coming with a 4gb or 250gb hard drive, the Xbox has a host of features as well as gaming, mainly through a wifi connection. Sky Player is one such feature, which lets Sky customers stream programmes through the console. Also, the 360 can download films from the online store in much the same way as is possible with the PS3. Other features include a specialised Facebook portal, free downloadable game demos and online multiplayer gaming.

The games available for the Xbox 360 perhaps cover the greatest spectrum of all three consoles. While the Wii is seen more for the younger or family gamer and the PlayStation 3 for the heavy gamer perhaps the Xbox 360 can be seen as somewhere in the middle.

Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii is the cheapest console on sale. It is marketed as a console for more recreational use for the whole family, and is more focused on games than entertainment in the wider sense as is the case with the other two consoles. The Nintendo has less processing power than the Xbox 360 or PS3 and as such the games are usually not as visually impressive.

Nintendo however has instead focused on the overall fun factor of the gaming experience by pioneering the use of motion control. The console picks up on the movement of the user and processed those movements into action on screen. This often creates a more involving experience. In retaliation, both Sony and Microsoft have recently released their own motion sensitive control system.

So, the Nintendo can be said to be most suited to party or family situations. It's a more relaxed and recreational experience which while not as technologically advanced as the other consoles is also cheaper. The PS3 is the most serious gaming machine on sale. It is more for those who prefer to play games alone for several hours to get immersed into another world. It also has the advantage of a BluRay disc drive but is relatively expensive. Lastly, the Xbox 360 may be seen as fitting in between the other two. Titles available cover a greater spectrum of genres and while the emphasis is on fun, there is still the impressive graphics and processing power to keep a serious gamer happy. They have however had complaints over build quality and reliability.

Whichever you choose, make sure you have a lot of fun!
